Miss Ashburn, Bride-Elect
Honored At Drop In Feb. 2 .
Miss Kathy Ashburn, bride-elect
of Charles Bryan Archer on March
5, was honored on Wednesday
evening of last week at a drop-in at
the home of Mrs. Homer Tuttle,
with Mrs. Bobby Cox, co-hostess.
Candles and arrangements of
flowers made a lovely background
as guests were greeted and directed
to the dining table for an assort
ment of hors d'oeuvres and punch,
served by the mother of the bride
elect, Mrs. Randall Ashburn. The
dining tabic was covered with an
army-navy tablecloth, centered
with yellow roses and flanked by
yellow burning tapers.
Miss Ashburn was presented a
corsage of yellow daisies upon ar
rival and other gifts from the
hostesses were a plate, a piece of
crystal in her chosen patterns, and
an elegant blue pillow, cross
stitched and centered with her in
itials, incidentally the same now as
they will be after she is married.
Mrs. Ferguson Hosts
Public Affairs Department
NFWC. Public Affairs Depart
ment of the Raeford Woman's
Club met on Tuesday evening of
last week in the home of Mrs. Ben
Ferguson. Co-hostesses were Mrs.
Paul Livingston and Mrs. Charles
Constantino.
Miss Caroline Parker, chair
man, opened the meeting with a
devotional service and presided
'over the business session.
Mrs. Stanley Koonce, program
chairman, introduced Mrs. Bill
Cameron, coordinator of Excep
tional Children for Hoke County
Schools, who presented the pro
gram. Mrs. Cameron said that
great stride had been made in
education for the exceptional
child. In 1973 eleven teachers
taught some special child. Today
ther are 41 people employed in the
Hoke County schools under the ex
ceptional program. In 1974
seventy-five major laws were pass
ed assuring the right to education
for the exceptional child. Prior to
that the handicapped children were
allowed only public education
which caused many to remain at
home with little or no contact with
others.

Presently the exceptional pro
gram in Hoke County has a
$500, OCX) budget, 85 percent of
which is spent in salaries and fringe
benefits. These children learn by
doing, touching and holding and
this takes extensive supplies. Mrs.
Cameron also explained the SWAP
Program with Sandhill Youth Cen
ter.
During the social hour
refreshments in the Valentine
motif were served by the hostesses.

M.V. Culbreth was honored on
his birthday Sunday at the home of
his son and daughter-in-law, Mr.
and Mrs. Malcolm Culbreth, Jr.
and son Malcolm III, at their home
in Smithfield.
Mr. Culbreth was accompanied
to Smithfield by his wife, their son,
Larry, his mother, Mrs. Ethel
Culbreth and Mrs. Culbreth's
aunt, Mrs. Ella Carr. Mr. and
Mrs. Culbreth's other daughter,
Mrs. David Melvin and Mr.
Melvin of Winterville, N.C. joined
them for the birthday luncheon.
During the afternoon many
friends and former neighbors in
the Selma-Smithfield area were in
vited to share birthday cake and ice
cream, along with much reminesc
ing with the Culbreth family,
