Since the facility came under fire from Morrow and other Human Resources personnel several years ago, McCain officials have found hiring staff and physicians difficult because of the uncertainty of the hospital's future. Recently, McCain has been averaging around 70 patients per day with over 900 admissions dur ing the last year, hospital Ad ministrator John Watson said. At its peak, the hospital cared for almost 750 patients, who had an average stay of two years. Pa tients now stay from 30 to 50 days, Watson said. Under a plan proposed earlier by Morrow , the facility would be clos ed and TB patients would be cared for in community hospitals. However, in a study conducted by the task force, community hospital administrators said their facilities did not have the space or equipment to care for tuberculosis patients. The operation of McCain costs taxpayers about $3 million per year, and supporters argue that the state will pay more for patient care by using community hospitals. Although care at McCain is averaging about $100 per day, state officials say that patient stays could be cut and cost lowered by using community facilities. Patients would also be happier if they are treated in their homes. Human Resources Tuberculosis Control Branch Chief James Jones said. Tuberculosis is increasing in cer tain groups, like migrant workers, but is decreasing among members of the general public, Jones said. Under state law. North Carolina is required to treat TB patients, and supporters feel that McCain offers the best treatment at the lowest cost for those infected with the disease who have to be confin ed. "We could be making a big mistake," DeVane said, noting that by not confining drug resis tant patients more people could be infected with the heartier strain of the disease. Although McCain was originally constructed during the early 1920's, the facility has been remodeled recently and is in good physical shape. Staff members, many of who were former TB patients, are car ing and conscientious, Watson says. "A person can come here, receive better treatment at a lower cost, than most hospitals in the stale," the McCain administrator said. "As far as having a caring at titude, I'll stand these nurses here against any," Watson added.
