Group Has Busy Week S.A.D.D. is a name which now has a meaning to our 150,000 high school students. It stands for Students Against Driving Drunk. The group's objectives are: -To save our lives and the lives of others. -Educate students concerning the problem of drinking and driv ing. -To develop peer counseling among students about alcohol use. -To increase public awareness and prevention of this problem everywhere. S.A.D.D. is now in over 100 schools. It began in September, 1981. The program was developed and conducted by Robert Anastas, in Boston, Mass. The local Hoke County Youth Council sponsored S.A.D.D. week March 28 through April, in hopes of starting a permanent chapter in Raeford. Contracts were given to students and parents in an effort to lessen the incident of youth involvement in alcohol related accidents. Questionnaires were also cir culated, asking local residents their opinions about alcohol and driv ing, and civic, church and school programs were held during the week. Here are some of the points made by the youth group during the week: ?One American life is lost every 21 minutes in alcohol related auto crashes. ?The drinking driver problem creates an estimated cost of over $5 billion annually. ?For Americans up to age 35, the number one cause of death is motor vehicle incidents, and more than half of highway deaths are caused by drunken drivers. ?On a average week-end night, one out of every 10 drivers on the road is drunk. ?165 "to of drivers who kill themselves in single-car wrecks are drunk. ?Of every 2,000 drunken drivers, only one is arrested. The chance of receiving a serious penal ty is mathematically insignificant. ?Drunken driving is the nations number one highway safety pro blem. ? Drunken driving is responsible for the most common form of violent death in the nation. These statistics were provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Na tional Safety council. tyosuj&L About SpAirUf GleanwUf AndL If audi lAJosik!
