School News Ralph Ketner, co-founder of The Food Lions stores, addresses students and employees at the annual DECA employer-employee banquet. Ketner Advises DECA Work should be fun, the head of one of the largest grocery chains in the nation told members of the Hoke High School Distributive Education program during an an nual employer-employee banquet last Wednesday night. Ralph Ketner, Chairman of the Food Lion Stores, Inc. was the guest speaker of the event, and he told an audience of over 100 students, employers and guests to get a job they like. Ketner, who was both charming and funny, captured his audience with stories of how Food Town (now Food Lion) got off its feet. In a more serious note, Ketner addressed the DECA students with a few words of advice. "Find a job you enjoy," Ketner told the students. During the banquet, the Hoke High Barbershop singers perform ed a variety of tunes for the au dience, and a buffet dinner was served. In his closing remarks Ketner urged the audience to find a job that they didn't consider to be work. The true measure of success is the pleasure you achieve and not the size of your bank balance. Ketner said in his closing remarks. Hoke Highlights by Teresa Taylor & Pam Currie Gwendolyn Southerland is the HOSTS (Help Our Students to Succeed) tutor-of-the-month. She received a certificate award from Barbara Buie, Hoke Reading Literacy Council director, last Wednesday. Active in numerous school ac tivities, Gwen is secretary of HOSTS, and works in the high school office. The Hoke High School Chorus and Chorale has already announc ed the theme for their spring con cert to be given on May 19. "Under the Big Top" promises to be a great show. Members of the singing groups ahve worked very hard in preparation. The Chorale sang for the Arts Festival at 2 p.m. Sunday on the front steps of J.W. Turlington School. The Beauty Shop and Barber Shop Singers also gave their performance. The Hoke High band is prepar ing for their spring concert to be given on May 10. The band's trip to Florida ap proaches. too. On May II, the band begins their trip. The Special Olympics went off in grand style last Thursday. The celebrities who attended included Miss Piggy, Kermit the Frog, and E.T. The senior class has ordered t-shirts. The t-shirts will have the names of the senior members on it. The T-shirts cost S5.50 each. FBLA members will be going on a trip to Chason's Barbeque for their annual dinner. They will be going on May 5. Seniors will be leaving for the senior trip to Six Flags on May 6. All students attending must pay an additional $2 by today. Friday, April 29 is prom night. Tickets are on sale for juniors and seniors. Miss Carla Myers is in Raleigh this week serving as a Page for North Carolina Gov. Jim Hunt. This is a very high honor and congratulations to Miss Myers for achieving it. Stephanie Drotar was the new can didate. Hoke Rangerettes Win In State Competition i?* ? m Operation Driver Excellence Winner Darren Chason, a Hoke High sophomore, won first place honors at the state finals of the Amvet Dodge Operation Driver Ex cellence meet. Chason was chosen to compete in the program by driv ing instructor Hon'ard Bark ley. ' Darren was chosen because of his driving ability, " Bark ley said.. Chason, who has already won a S 1,000 scholarship will now ad vance to the nationals which will be held in May. The program features a written test, an obstacle test and skills test on the part of each driver. "I think Darren's chances of winning the nationals is as good as the next, " Bark ley said. THE REAGAN PHYSIQUE. In 1940, the Division of Fine Arts of the University of Southern Califor nia selected Ronald Reagan as the man who possessed the most near ly perfect male figure. That is what has been happening with the Woodmen of the World Rangerettes of Raeford. Their biggest and proudest ac complishment as of yet was achiev ed this past March 26 in Kinston. It was there that they won the State Competition for performing their Woodmen Ritual. With this achievement they now have the honor of performing the Ritual at the State Convention in Raleigh May 2. The Hoke Co. High School Barber Shop Singers have been in vited to perform also. The Rangerettes have been ex tremely busy with rehearsing and practicing for the State Competi tion, but not too busy to forget about other matters of impor tance. In January they made bountiful fruit baskets for the residents of the rest home. They also paid special attention to their adopted grandparents along with the others. On Valentine's Day the rest home held their attention again. Miss Rangerette: Christy Beasley and Lil' Miss Laura Foster were dressed as cupids, while the remaining were dressed in their uniforms. Christy and I. aura presented their adopted grandparents, Mr. File and Mrs. Edna Jenkins each a balloon bouquet, candy and a special card. They also gave a special balloon to "Hoppy" father of Mrs. Junior Ward of Raeford. The girls also made personalized people pom-pom cards, lollipops and valentina cards which they presented to all the residents. Earlier in the month of February the girls participated in the annual Cystic Fibrosis State Skate, held at the Bordeaux Skating Rink in Fayetleville. The girls raised $324. for the event. The Raeford unit has made a big improvement over the past two years. They have received a great deal of state recognition for their hard work and achievements. Christy Beasley, Miss Rangeretle, Lisa Usher, Donna Hales, President and Leslie Foster assistance Leader have been chosen to represent the N.C. Woodmen of the World Youth Program at the Dogwood Festival April 19-20 at the Cumberland Auditorium. Harvey Bedsole, National Direc tor and State Manager sent a special invitation to the Ranger ettes to help serve as Camp Escorts at dedication of J. Ed Williams Youth Camp in Kinston, N.C. June 18. A member of State dignitaries have been invited along with a number of state Legislators. This is quite an honor for the Raeford Rangerettes.
