Service award On April 27, Oscar Walters receiv ed his 25-year service award from Burlington Industries Raeford Plant in Raeford. Oscar began his career with Burlington on April 28, 1958 at a Burlington plant in Fayetteville. In March of 1976 he came to the Raeford Plant and has performed various jobs in the Weave Room such as Cloth Doffer and Weaving Machine Operator. In recognition of Oscar's Service Anniversary he has received a 25 year diamond pin, Burlington logo pocket knife and 25 year service certificate. Burlington 5 Honored For Safety For outstanding achievement in on-the-job safety, the Burlington Raeford Plant has earned a special award from the North Carolina Department of Labor, which Assistant State Labor Commis sioner Charles Jeffress will present at a dinner in Lumberton on Thursday, May 12. Jeffress will recognize the com pany with the department's million-hour safety award for ex tended operations without a lost time or disabling injury. Burlington Industries Inc., Burl ington Menswear-Raeford Plant, earned a 10-million-hour award for compiling an even 10 million safe employee hours, Oct. 2, 1978-Dec. 13, 1982. Nearly 150 guests are expected to attend the dinner, which is scheduled to begin at 7 p. m. at the Red Carpet Inn, 1-95 at Carthage Road. At the program, co-sponsored annually with the Lumber ton/Robeson County Chamber of Commerce, Jeffress also will honor 83 other businesses, govern mental units and service establishments with the depart ment's annual safety award. Recipients come from throughout Bladen, Columbus, Cumberland, Hoke and Robeson counties. Other local firms and organiza tions that will be honored are: Hoke Concrete Works, fifth con secutive year. County of Hoke, sixth consecutive year and Burl ington Industries inc., Menswear Dyeing Plant, for ninth con secutive year. Qualifiers for the department's 1982 award either maintained a perfect safety record during the calendar year or recorded an oc cupational injury incidence rate at least 50 percent below the statewide rate for their particular industry. The Lumberton dinner is the 19th in a series of 29 labor depart ment safety awards presentations scheduled across the state this spr ing. The safety incentive effort began in 1946 as a cooperative ac tivity with the U. S. Department of Labor under the World War 11 Manpower Act. Since 1961, the program has been administered solely by the Department of Labor. 2nd Quarter Bright For Burlington Ind. Burlington Industries, Inc. reported last week level sales and higher net earnings for the second quarter of fiscal 1983 compared with the second quarter of fiscal 1982. Net sales for the quarter ended April 2 were $737,950,000 on which the company's consolidated net earnings were SI 9,884,000 or 70 cents per share. In the comparable period last year, Burlington reported net sales of $738, 1 30,000 on which the com pany's consolidated net earnings were $14,067,000, or 50 cents per share. Foreign exchange translation ef fects were negligible for the second quarter of 1983. In the same quarter of 1982, there was a charge of 13 cents per share related to a devaluation of the Mexican peso which was in large part offset by a gain on an ex change of debt for cash and stock.
