Artistic winners The poster contest sponsored by the Hoke Soil and Water Conservation District turned out to be a huge success this year with over 100 fourth, fifth, and sixth graders participating in the contest. The theme of this years contest was " Conservation of Soli and Water, Our Hope for the Future" First, second and third place winners were chosen from each grade level with cash prizes awarded In the amounts of $10, $7.50, and 15. Honorable mentions were given with prizes of $5 and $4 being awarded to the winners . All participants received a Certificate of Participation. 11 Alice To Be Presented The J.W. Turlington Chorus will present Alice In Wonderland on Tuesday, May 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the school auditorium. Follow ing the musical, the Chorus and Sixth Grade Ensemble, will present a program of songs. The cast will consist of Jennifer Eanes as Alice, Mary Anne Poole as the White Rabbit, Christy Mc Call as the Dodo Bird, Jennifer Brock and Mandy Hedgepeth as Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, Kim Colston as the Caterpillar, i 141 Poster Contest awards presented Casey Williams (right) receives a " Certificate of Merit" for her award winning entry in the North Carolina Bicycle Committee's annual poster contest. The certificate was presented during the Committee's May 6 meeting in Raleigh. Williams, who is a fifth-grader at Turlington School, was sponsored by the Hoke County Parks and Recreation Department. Her poster won " Most Original " from the fifth-grade. A total of 234 posters were entered in this year 's contest. Each poster had to incorporate some combination of bicycling and a North Carolina feature or landmark. It also had to promote this year's North Carolina Bicycle Week Theme of " North Carolina is for Bicycling. " Certificates were awarded for the " Best Theme Interpretation," " Best Drawing," and " Most Original Poster" in grades four, five and six. A total of nine students received cer tificates. In addition to her certificate, Williams also received over $100 in prizes from national bicycling manufacturers. Presenting the certificate to Williams is Wesley Webster (left). Deputy Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Observing is Jeanette Carl of Raleigh, who is a member of the state Board of Transportation.
