Sports Going for it all! Derrick Whittenburg (shown here) and members of the NCAA champion IS.C. State basketball team were on hand last Thursday night to help raise money for the American Cancer Society. In a game against the Hoke County All-Stars, state seniors Sidney Lowe, Thurl Bailey and Whit ten burg razzle-dazzled the audience with dunk shots, fancy dribbling and all around fun. The players exhibited their talents before an audience of near ly 1,000 people and helped to raise approximately 5 1,200 for the Cancer Society, Hoke President Steve Parker said. Along with the basketball game, the Cancer Society in Hoke County raised another $1,300 from the sale of cookbooks and other types of donations, Parker said. Blazers Closing On First Place With only a half-game margin standing between the Hoke County Blazers and first place, the team tucked another win in their pocket by defeating Red Springs 5-2 Sun day afternoon. Hit leaders for Sunday's game were Allen Morrison with three hits and Timmy Clark with two. Rashad Rahmaan was the winning pitcher with 10 strike outs. The Blazers with a 8-2 overall record trail the Littlefield team, which has a 7-1 record, by a half game for the first place honors. This weekend, the Blazers will play a home game Saturday against St. Pauls, and head to Fair Grove Sunday for an away game. Willie a 6'0" senior is a member of the boy's track team. Willie runs the middle distance race of 800 meters. Willie was nomianted for his performance in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Sectional Meet held last Friday, May 13, at Scotland High School. Willie won the 800 meter run in a time of 1:56.88. This time set a new school and sectional record. Willie will travel to Wilson this Thursday to compete in the 800 meter run in the NCHSAA Eastern Regional track meet. Sabrina, a 5*1 1 * * senior is a member of the girl's track team. Sabrina throws the shot put for the Lady Bucks. Sabrina was nominated for her performance in the NCHSAA Girl's Eastern Regional Cham pionship Meet on Thursday, May 12. In this meet Sabrina placed first with a put of 38*4 Vi". Sabrina's finish qualified her for the NCHSAA Girl's State Track Meet to be held on Friday, May 20, at Hoke High School.
