Doings SLMMER AT ZOO - The calendar may say it's spring, but at the North Carolina Zoological Park near Asheboro, summer hours are in effect. Now through October 15, the State Zoo will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends and holidays. The Zoo is open every day of the year. More than $00 animals are on exhibit in the 300-acre African section and the 40-acre Education Center. Admission is S3 for visitors 16 and older and SI for children ages 2-15 and senior citizens. The All-American Pickup Truck 200-mile feature has been scheduled for a 1 :30p.m. start, climaxing two days of racing activity. Preliminary action ^ill start Saturday at 9 a.m. with practice, followed by qualify ing in the afternoon. Only American-made, full-sized Dodge, Chevrolet, Ford and GMC pickups will be eligible. The 13th Annual Lee Elder Celebri ty Pro/Am Golf Tournament will be held at the Pinehuret Country Club August 26-28. Hoke Senior Girls Honored For Help A group of senior girls at Hoke County High School went to Ral eigh, Thursday, May 19, to attend a Young Volunteers in Action program by the Commission of Indian Affairs. They were recog nized by Governor James Hunt for their many hours of volunteer tutoring service to their fellow students. Hoke Reading-Literacy Council's director, Barbara Buie, recom mended that this group, known as HOSTS (Help Our Students to ;Succeed), be the recipients of this .honor. ? HOSTS was first organized in January, 1982, under the leader ship of Mrs. Pat Johnson, Reading Techniques teacher. This school year membership reached 28. These volunteers work with their peers in all subject areas. They give their free time, knowledge, and skills to help students who are having scholastic difficulty better understand subject-matter and as signments. The tutors who have been super lative were recognized by Gov. Hunt. Included were: Connie Car ter, Jane Dial, Gwendolyn Souther land, Sharon D. Breeden, Terri Lynn Bethea, Tamey Baldwin, Carol Davis, Vallery Luckie. Mavis Lide, Patricia Kellermann, Avejo Woods, and Caroline Ansley. All received certificates of ap preciation. Accompanying the seniors to Raleigh were Ella Ransom, of the Hoke Reading Literacy Council, and Pat Johnson. HOSTS advisor. The public is Invited to attend. Local Memorial Day Closings Noted Memorial Day weekend pro vides many Hoke County businesses with an extra day of weekend fun. For many area businesses, Mon day, May 30 will be considered a legal holiday and therefore many doors will be locked to the public. Area banks, city offices, county offices and some downtown mer chants will be closed Monday in honor of the holiday. The Post Of fice will also be closed on Monday. All businesses will assume their usual operating hours again on Tuesday.
