Going for it Participants in the AM A National Youth Qualifier at the Montrose Motocross in Hoke County run neck and neck with each other for the first place honors. The youth qualifier which was held May 21 and 22 was for riders ages 5-15. Over 200 participants actively raced in the two day event which was sponsored by the American Motorcyclist Association and Kawasaki. Riders came from Florida. Alabama, Georgia, Virginia. C. v Phone 875-8912 S, Richard McMillan 875-2493 Night* 875-561 4 Moody, Johnson Named Top Athelets Robert Moody and Greta Johnson have been named as Male and Female Athletes of the Year by a vote of the Hoke High Coaching Staff. Greta, a senior, was nominated for her contributions in three sports this year. She played on the varsity volleyball team, of which she was the captain. For her efforts in volleyball, she received the Most Valuable Award and was also named to the Southeastern 4A All Conference Team. Greta also played varsity basket ball. She has played basketball for four years and this year she receiv ed the Coaches Award for her con tributions to the team's winning season. Greta is also a member of the varsity softball team. She is the catcher on the team. Last year she received the Most Improved Award and was also named to the All-Conference Team. Greta plans to attend North Carolina State University in the ROTC program to major in com puter science with a view toward a career in the Air Force. Robert Moody, a senior, was named Male Athlete of the Week for his contributions in three sports also. Robert has played football for four years on the Buck's team. He has played on the defensive line for all four years. Robert has also been on the wrestling team for two years. (Photo by Dale Dees ) year Robert won the Southeastern 4A Conference Championship in the 197 pound division. He also won the sectional championship. He placed 2nd in the regional tournament and placed 5th in the state. Robert is also a member of the Hoke High boy's track team. He throws the discus and runs the hurdles. Robert was honored last year by being named to the Buck's Antler Club, for lettering in three varsity sports. He will be named to the Club again this year at the annual Award's Banquet. Robert plans to join the U.S. Marine Corps upon graduation in June. Blazers Split In a rather disappointing weekend, the Hoke County Blazers lost one gapie and won by forfeit in another to bring their season record to 9-3. In Saturday's game, the Blazers fell victims to St. Pauls, losing by a score of 6-3. In Sunday's game, the opposing team, Fairgrove, did not have enough players and the game was a forfeit win for the Blazers. On Saturday, May 28. the Blazers will travel to Lumberton for an away game, returning to their home field for Sunday's game.
