Certificate of Merit D. Garland Burnett e, (right) County Supervisor of the Hoke County I Farmers Horn* Administration ( FmHA ) Office, was awarded a Certificate of Merit for outstanding performance in rural housing servicing within Hoke County from Larry W. Godwin, State Director of FmHA. W. Jerry Batten, FmHA District Director, presented the award to Burnette on May 31. Batten, commenting at tht presentation, stated that, " Numerous families of low to moderate Income within Hoke County have been able to continue ownership of their homes due to Burnette's diligent efforts. Circle Chairman, Mrs. Roberta Talbert presided and Bible Study was led by Mrs. Judy McKethan. After the meeting adjourned the hostess served refreshments and a social hour was enjoyed. Vacation Bible School will begin at Galatia Presbyterian Church Monday, June 20 and continue through Thursday, June 24. In the absence of the Church Pastor, Rev. Archie Barringer, Rev. Jimmy Dees was in the pulpit for Morning Worship service last Sunday at Tabernacle Baptist Church. The attendance was real good. The topic of the sermon was "Your Choice" and it brought a good message. There was good attendance for the Gospel singing Sunday night at Tabernacle Baptist Church. "The Pioneers" of Raeford presented the music. Tabernacle Baptist Church is planning to enlarge the sanctuary and there will be a groundbreaking June 26th. The construction will begin July 5th or as soon as possi ble thereafter. Mrs. Bernice Bostic who was hospitalized last week for surgery on her leg was released Monday and is recuperating at home. Mrs. Charles Johnston of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Helen Hinkle of Welcome, North Carolina visited relatives in the area the past weekend. While here they visited Mrs. Zula Martin and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Cameron of Carolina Beach along with Mr. and Mrs. Herman Koonce. Lacy Koonce and son, Lance Koonce of Lumberton visited Mr. and Mrs. Herman Koonce the past Sunday. Lance was leaving to join a group on a tour of Europe. Karen and Kirkland Parker will be returning Saturday June ilth from a tour of Europe. Kim and John McColl had a "Cook and Camp-Out" the past weekend. Mrs. William Timmerman of Bostic Road and Mr. and Mrs. Ed ward Collins, Jr. of Fayetteville spent last week at Ocean Beach, New Jersey and had a delightful trip. Mrs. Lawrence Barnard joined Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Barnard in Cheraw, South Carolina to drive to Athens, Georgia Wednesday to visit Rev. and Mrs. Ray Austin and family and to attend their daughter, Dana Austins' high school graduation. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Barnard returned to Cheraw Friday. Mrs. Lawrence Barnard accompanied the Austins to Atlanta Friday and spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Kerns and Mrs. Joyce Wooten for the weekend and returned home Sunday night. Lawrence Barnard visited his brother Littleton Barnard and family of Cheraw Wednesday of last week. He also spent Friday at ? Topsail Island fishing. Mrs. Louise Watson was over- ; night guest of her sister, Mrs. Alma Parker of Selma Thursday ; of last week. Mrs. Parker returned ; home with her and will also be visiting other relatives in the area. Mrs. Mary Long of Fayetteville was on the sick list last week. Mrs. Louise Watson and Mrs. Alma Parker of Selma visited her Friday. Phillip Watson of Fayetteville visited Mrs. Grace English and Mrs. Louise Watson last Friday. Mrs. Grace English spent a few days at White Lake this week. Congratulations to Mrs. Marie Fowler for her new grandson, Brandon McCoy Durham born Monday morning June 13 in Hillsboro, North Carolina. Con gratulations also to the proud parents, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Durham. Mrs. Alice Allen visited her children in Charleston, South Carolina recently. While there she and her daughter Miss Sandra Allen went to Fort Pierce and Orlando, Florida for a week. They also spent two days at EPCOT and reported a real nice trip. Mrs. Vernell Closson of Goose Creek, South Carolina spent the past week with Mrs. Alice Allen. They attended the wedding of Ed die Prevatte in the First Baptist Church in Lumberton Saturday. They also attended the wedding of Robert Thornton at The Church of God of the Prophecy near Eastover Sunday. Mrs. Marie Fowler and daughter Cathy Fowler also attended with them. Sympathy is extended to the family of Mrs. Ruby Biggs who died Sunday. The funeral will be at Raeford Presbyterian Church and burial will be in Antioch Presby terian Church Cemetery. Literacy Council Fish Fry Successful Hoke Reading/Literacy Coun cil's annual Fish Fry was a success, Willie Featherstone, chairman of the event said. "We nearly doubled last year's profit. I'm really impressed and want to express thanks to the more than 65 volunteers who had a part in this," he said. Project Director Barbara Buie also expressed thanks especially to those who sold and purchased tickets. A special thanks goes to Bob Gentry for heading an outstanding cooking committee. According to Ms. Buie the Literacy Council's success means that they have operating expense through June 30. July 1 begins the new fiscal year and fund raising begins again. However, the council is op timistic. Some children and Ms. Buie will attend the Laubach Literacy Ac tion Regional Conference later this month. / Other than funds,the council's greatest need is volunteer tutors. The council will train and place volunteers with a student at a con venient time and place. Hoke Reading/Literacy Council is a non-profit organization and is affiliated with North Carolina Literacy Association and Laubach Literacy Action headquartered in Syracuse, New York.
