DSS Renews Distributing Efforts For Local Senior Discount Cards Local social services personnel have launched a renew effort to distribute Senior Tar Heel Cards to Hoke County residents, Depart ment of Social Services (DSS) Director Ken Witherspoon said Tuesday. A Senior Tar Heel Card permits individuals 60 and over to receive various discounts in Raeford and Hoke County. Businesses in other parts of the state might also honor the card. Witherspoon said. A card may be secured at the T.B. Letter, Jr. Building on Mon day or Friday, beginning June 13 between the hours of 8 a.m. and noon and 1-5 p.m. In order to secure a card an in dividual should bring their Social Security card and proof of age with them. These cards are being issued to Hoke County residents only he said, adding that residents of other counties may contact local Depart ment of Social Services or Councils on Aging if interested in a card. Flora Watson and Merlin Jones, Student Interns from Sandhills Community College, will be visiting throughout the county to distribute the cards. Shooting Probe Continues (Continued from Page 1A) The bullet lodged into LeGrande's shoulder. The incident occurred after the two policemen had been dispatch ed to Jack's Video Village on Main Street where a man was reportedly "passed out" on the sidewalk. The man was apparently LeGrande's grandfather. The younger LeGrande reportedly verbally abused the of ficers and "jerked away" when the two attempted to arrest him. After the fracas, LeGrande was arrested and charged with three counts of assault on a police of ficer, one count of communicating threats to a police officer and one count of resisting arrest, a spokesman for the police depart ment said last week. . . . Around Town (Continued from Page 1A) The News-Journal was telling me last week that he had read with in terest my comments about Miss Carrie Sturgis. He said that she taught him in Wadesboro after she left Raeford. According to Fogleman, Miss Sturgis came to Wadesboro in 1937 and left there in the late 1960's. He stated that besides teaching Eng lish, that she was also the school librarian. As far as he could recollect, she returned to Rock Hill, S.C. after leaving Wadesboro. ? ? ? (Jenny) Carroll has been promoted to Banking Manager of the Sunset Branch, United Carolina Bank, Raeford. Her banking career began 28 years ago with the First National Bank in Sew Castle, Virginia. Since that time she has worked with banks in Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina. In 1974 she came to work as a teller for The Bank of Raeford. LeGrand was treated and releas ed from Moore Memorial Hospital. According to the police spokesman, LeGrande is out of jail under a $2,500 secured bond. "We would like to move out of the jail as soon as possible. We are very pushed for space," Sheriff Barrington said. . A proposal had apparently been discussed allowing for the Driver's License Bureau to be moved into the far end of the annex, but Sheriff Barrington was opposed. "I have nothing against the Driver's License examiners, but there would be chaos if they moved in here," Barrington said. "There would be too many members of the public going through. It would disrupt my staff," Barrington added. "1 could not live with that type of situation. I had rather stay at the jail," the sheriff said. Park OK d In other action, the commis sioners gave Parks and Recreation Director Denise Melton permission to seek $20,000 in matching grant monies for the development of the Burlington Recreation site. Melton will be applying for a Land and Water Conservation grant that will allow for the con struction of a ballfield at the Burl ington site. The county has had $20,000 budgeted for construction of the park, but according to Melton that money was just not enough to get the project off the ground. If the application is approved and the money awarded to Hoke County, the park will be built on land donated by Burlington In dustries for use as a recreation , facility. In other action, the board voted to: --Change their regular meeting from July 4 to July 5 at 9:30 a.m. --Hold a budget work session Monday June 27 at 7:30 p.m. Shoplifting 'Ring' Snared In Moore County Five Scotland County men were arrested two weeks ago by Moore County officials and later by Raeford police in connection with multiple shoplifting charges. According to police chief Leonard Wiggins, a report from B.C. Moores Department Store lead to the eventual arrest. Moores reported to the police department that someone had taken an AM-FM cassette recorder from their store on June 8. Later in the day Moore County officials neportcd that they had ar rested five men on shoplifting charges and had in their possession items believed to have come from Raeford, Chief Wiggins said. The radio apparently stolen from Moore's, steaks and clothing were recovered. Warrants were issued against all five men by Raeford police. The five men, Ricky Lee and Warren Leach of Wagram, Larry Ellison, Delcy Henderson and Alexander Breeden all of Laurin burg were charged with two counts of shoplifting and aiding and abet ting, Wiggins said. In other matters, Raeford police received a report of clothes thefts from Maggie Smith of 524 East Sixth Avenue. Smith told police officers that someone had taken clothes and linens off her line during the night. No suspects have been identified in this incident, Wiggins said. . . According to the report, Walker's purse was missing when she returned to her car. -Paul Jacobs, Red Springs, complained that someone pawned his property without his permis sion.
