Horsley Takes Golds At Jr. Olympic Trials On Friday and Saturday, June 24 and 25, Icesonnia Horsley cap tured two gold medals in the North Carolina Association TAC/USA Junior Olympics State Champion ' ships held in the Wallace Wade Stadium at Duke University, Durham. The meet consisted of teams from all over the state. Awards were given to the top six places: medals for first, second and third places, and ribbons for fourth, fifth and sixth places. Icesonnia competed in four events, capturing awards in three of them. In the 400 meter dash she took the first place winning a gold Bowling champs Jo Ann Allen (right) and Sharlene Jackson (left) both of Raeford brought home first place honors in the B Division doubles play May 21 and 22 in Fayetteville. Horsley's participation has qualified her to advance to the Na tional Junior Olympics on July 26-31. She will compete in the 400 meter dash and run third leg for the 15-16 age-group girls relay team. Meanwhile, she, along with other selected teammates, will travel to Ohio where they will com pete in the TAC/USA National Youth Athletics Track and Field Championships, July 1-3. Ronnie Locklear Shines 4 Hoke Runners Qualify Four members of the IEA Road Runners qualified for the National Regionals in the Junior Olympics State Championships held Friday and Saturday in Wallace Wade Stadium at Duke University in Durham. To qualify for the National Regionals, to be held in Athens, Georgia on July 8-9, a runner had to place fourth or higher in his event in the State Championship. Topping the list was 12-year-old Ronnie Earl Locklear who won the State Championship in the 1,500 meter and 3,000 meter races. In addition to winning first place in both races, Ronnie also set new state records in both events for his age group. Ronnie ran the 3,000 meters in 10:10 cutting 36 seconds off the old state record of 10:46. In the 1,500 meters, Ronnie ran a 4:50 cutting one second off the old record. Ronnie, who will be a seventh grader at Upchurch this year, has only been running for six months. According to his coach, Robert Taylor, Ronnie has a tremendous future in running. He will train very hard for the National Regionals, and I am sure he will do extremely well. Three other members of the Road Runners also qualified for the National Regionals. In the 3,000 meter Midget Age Division (11-12 year olds), Robert Locklear placed third and Ivory Henderson placed fourth. In the 3,000 meter Youth Age Division (13-14 year olds), Robert Lambert qualified by placing fourth. Also competing for the Road Runners was Don Woods who placed sixth in the 5,000 meter run and Marty Locklear who placed seventh in the 3,000 meters and eighth in the 1,500 meters. Creech Honored Sergeant Charles R. Creech was presented the Communicator's Award for his excellence in oral and written communication, at the graduation banquet of the 21st Air Force Non-Commisioned Officer Leadership School in Dover, Delaware. Out of a graduating class of 53, Sergeant Creech's class standing was ninth. During the four-week course, NCO's learn leadership, manage ment, communication skills, world and military affairs. Sergeant Creech, a 1978 graduate of Hoke High School is currently stationed at Pope Air Force Base. Sergeant Creech along with his wife, the former Cindy Lynn Miller, and their two-year-old daughter, Amanda, make their home at Rt. 1, Lumber Bridge. Sergeant Creech is the son of Charles B. Creech and the late Maxine Cox Creech of Red Spr ings. Any coach who cannot accept defeat, an umpire's decision or ruling graciously will have bad influence on the players for whom the program is intended. Any coach who continues to do this will have to forfeit his position as a coach for the betterment of the program.
