Changing County's Phones
Gathers 'Little Interest'
Some Hoke County residents
J living on other area routes are hav
ing to dial long distance for county
services in the Raeford area.
The reason for this stems from
the boundary lines of the phone
companies, Carolina Telephone
and Telegraph Division Com
mercial Supervisor Mickey Mc
Dowell said Tuesday.
Area residents living at Rt. 1,
Pine Bluff, Aberdeen, Red Springs
P or Wagram, must call long
distance to get any type of service
from the Hoke area.
"We go by boundary lines and
not county lines. Some of these ex
changes are not even serviced by
the Carolina Telephone
company," McDowell said.
Despite the different exchanges, ?
area residents can call Hoke and
Raeford for emergency services
without the long distance expense.
According to McDowell, area
residents needing emergency ser
vice should dial the operator and
ask for Zenith 5111.
This allows for a collect call at
no charge to the customer,
McDowell said.
"In the past there has been a
small amount of interest in getting
a countywide extended area service
hook-up, but nothing ever came of
it," McDowell said.
The countywide service hook up
would allow residents to call
Raeford at no additional long
distance charge, but basic rates
would increase.
That only creates more problems
for other residents who do not
wish to have the countywide ser
vice, McDowell said.
People living in Red Springs, for
instance, would have to pay the ad
ditional basic rate increase for
Hoke residents to call Raeford.
"That does not help support for
this service," McDowell said.
McDowell also adds that most
residents in these areas prefer get
ting countywide service to larger
towns such as Lumberton and
Southern Pines.
"The community of interest
tends to favor extended service in
larger towns rather than the
Raeford area," McDowell said.
In order to get the county ex
tended service, members of the
community and local government
leaders must show "sufficient" in
terest.
If enough people show they
want and need the service then the
telephone company takes the mat
ter to the North Carolina Utilities
Commission in Raleigh.

Fresh herbs for garnishing
everything from salads to main
dishes can be as close as the
backyard garden, or even the kit
chen window box.
Once confined mainly to
decorative gardens or commercial
farms, herb growing is gaining
renewed popularity among home
gardeners, says Dr. Brian M.
Lawrence, director of research and
development for the Avoca Divi
sion of RJR Technical Company, a
unit of R.J. Reynolds Develop
ment Corp.
Many commonly used herbs are
hardy plants that can easily be
grown in outdoor gardens or in
door planters, says Lawrence,
whose work focuses primarily on
the business of growing aromatic
plants including commonly known
herbs.
The Avoca Division of RJR

sage from which clary sage oil and
sclareol are obtained.
Clary sage oil is sold to perfume
houses where it is used primarily in
men's fragrance formulations.
Sclareol, because of its unique
chemical structure, is used as the
starting point for the manufacture
of a fixative, which has wide use in
the fragrance industry.
"The popular interest in grow
ing herbs reflects overall changing
attitudes on eating healthy, natural
foods, " Lawrence says. "People
are more interested in eating
natural, wholesome foods, and
that includes using fresh herbs
grown in their own gardens as
flavorings."
Although most herbs are
undemanding plants, close atten
tion to growing conditions can
assure flavorful, bountiful yields,
says Lawrence, who also is scien
tific editor of the international
publication. Perfumer and
