Mrs. Carlton INiven, Social Reporter, t7S-37BS Payne - Medlin Couple Wed In Laurinburg Church July 1 0 Miss Katherine Marie Payne and James Edward Medlin pledged wedding vows during a 3:00 p.m. ceremony Sunday, July 10, at the Caledonia United Methodist Church in Laurinburg. Parents of the bride are Mr. and Mrs. William Payne of Laurin burg. Parents of the groom are Roland Medlin and Mrs. Louise Pridgen Powell, both of Laurin burg. The grandmother of the bride is Mrs. Frances Strickland of Raeford. The bride attended school and graduated from Scotland High School in 1982. The bridegroom also graduated from Scotland High School in 1976. He is employed at McNair Equipment Co. as the assistant manager. Following a wedding trip to Daytona Beach, Florida, the cou ple will reside in Laurinburg. The bride wore a white organza gown with long organza bishop sleeves trimmed in rachael lace and ruffled cuffs. The gown featured a Queen Anne neckline with a natural waistline accented with rachael lace and pearls. The skirt was full and featured tier on tier of ruffled hemline trimmed in match ing lace and attached chapel train edged in matching lace. Her head piece was a silk floral and lace wreath enhanced with pearls carry ing a fingertip length illusion two tiered veil. She carried a colonial bouquet accented with pink sweetheart roses and babies' breath. Mrs. Donna Hutchins, sister of the bride, was matron of honor. Bridesmaids were Dawn Hague, Jeanette Tew, Rhonda Medlin, sister of the bridegroom, and Beth Cox, aunt of the bride, all of Laurinburg. Honor attendant and bridesmaids wore pink lustreglo gowns with dramatic sleeveless draped bodice with a cowl back, natural waistline and full skirt. They wore headpieces of silk pink flowers and babies' breath on satin braided ribbons accented with silk greenery. All attendants carried a single stem pink rose with babies' breath and pink flowing streamers. Flower girl was Angel Lynn Strickland of Locust, North Carolina, cousin of the bride. She wore a white organza gown featur ing an off the shoulder ruffled neckline with short puffy sleeves. The skirt of her gown was full and accented at hemline with self ruf fle. The back of the gown features tier on tier of lace inserts and self fabric ruffles creating an apron ef fect. She wore a headband covered with pink silk flowers and babies' breath accented with satin ribbon. She carried a white basket filled with pink rose petals. Roland Medlin attended his son as best man. Ushers were David McKenzie, Ronnie Reese, Barry Strickland, uncle of the bride, all of Laurinburg, Junior Strickland of Locust, uncle of the bride. Ringbearer was Christopher Rogers of Raeford, cousin of the bride. Christopher is the son of Cynthia Rogers and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Gore, all of Raeford. Music for the ceremony was pro vided by Chris Johnson of Laurel Hill. Soloist was Ronnie Reese of Laurinburg. Out of town guests included Mr. and Mrs. Ray Payne, grandparents of the bride, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Ritchie of Millersburg, Kentucky and Frank Hague of Shaumburg, Illinois. RECEPTION A reception was given by the bride's parents in the church fellowship hall after the wedding. The bridal register was attended by Debbie Johnson of Laurel Hill. Others serving in places of honor were Jan Benner, Vickie Scott, Beth Strickland, aunt of the bride, all of Laurinburg, and Kay Torrey of Ocala, Florida, sister of the bridegroom. Goodbyes were said by Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Medlin of Laurinburg, aunt and uncle of the bridegroom. Roland Medlin, father of the groom, entertained with a rehearsal dinner at the home of-Mr. and Mrs. William Payne Saturday night. Burns Family Gathers For Third Reunion Sunday, June 26, was the third annual reunion for the descendants of Thomas and Martha (Ham mond) Burns held at Plesant Hill Baptist Church near Dillon, S.C. The Mary Burns (Edward War ren Miller) family descendants were in charge of the 1983 reunion. Mrs. Pauline Cumber of Fayet teville and Evans Hall of Kenly registered fifty-three cousins. Mrs. Miriam Miller Gaddy of Lake View, South Carolina greeted her cousins and gave a special welcome to some eighteen cousins who were attending for the first time. The in vocation was given by Duncan Gaddy of Lake View. Special recognition was given by Mr. and Mrs. David Miller of Aberdeen to several descendants: the eldest, Mrs. Bessie Miller McCormick, 85, of Hamer, South Carolina, grand daughter of Thomas and Martha; the youngest, Timothy Wayne Bullock, six months old, third great-grandson of Thomas and Martha, and son of Lynn and Wayne Bullock of Lumberton, and to Mr. and Mrs. Melvin (Martha B.) Thompson of Columbia, South Carolina, who traveled the greatest number of miles to join their family. Harvey Miller and Worth Miller, all buried in the Plesant Hill Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. David Miller of Aberdeen furnished all ot the flowers, plants and gifts for the reunion. Mrs. Ann B. Burns was elected President. Mrs. Keith Honor Guest On 90th Birthday There were four births since the reunion last year. Two deaths were reported - Mrs. Viola Hamilton Burns, April 7, of Dillon, and Alton Parker of Fairmont. The oldest daughter of Thomas and Martha, Mary (1876-1938), married Edward Warren Miller of Dillon. Attending from this family were Mrs. Bessie Miller McCor mick and Mrs. Mable McCormick McDuffie from Hamer, C.B. Mc Cormick of Dillon; Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Gaddy of Lake View; Mrs Maude Arnette Miller from Raeford; Mrs. Pauline Cumber from Fayetteville; Evans Hall from Kenly; Mrs. Jackie McGriffin and Dennis from Wilmington; Mr. and Mrs. David Miller and sons Bryan, Andy and Matthew from Aber deen; Mrs. Carlee Harper, C.W. and Glen Harper, Eric Harper, Annette and Marvin West and twins, Amy and David, Diane and Sam Liles, Mrs. Leon Miller, Lynn and Wayne Bullock and son Timothy Wayne, Mrs. Betty Speight and family, Mrs. Dorothy Stone and family from Lumber ton. Present from the Thomas Jeffer son Bums (1 882- 1 962) third son, were nine descendants. Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Thompson of Colum bia; Mrs. Ann B. Burns and daughter Mary from Cary; Mrs. Betty B. Currie of Raeford; and Mr. and Mrs. Vernon (Jessie B.) Jackson and sons John Wayne and Vernon Lee Jackson, Jr. of Max ton. The Willie Ira Burns (1885-1972) family was represented by Wilber and Alice Burns of Fayetteville. Flowers were placed in the church in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Burns, Mr. and Mrs. Ed ward Warren Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Celebration of the 90th birthday of Mrs. Margaret Cameron Keith was held at the Wagon Wheel Restaurant in Raeford at 6:00p.m. Saturday, July 16. Dinner was served to the friends and relatives assembled to honor Mrs. Keith and her three cousins who were also 90 years of age. Mrs. Kate Blue Cov ington, Mrs. Mayme Bevan and Mrs. Mellie McFadyen joined with Mrs. Margaret Keith in recalling pleasant memories of the early days of Hoke County. Memories called included the homeplaces in the area which is now part of the Fort Bragg Reser vation and the pleasant times that each of the ladies had in visiting and socializing in each others homes. The ladies said that Raeford and Hoke County had changed much in the last ninety years. Transpor tation changed from horses and buggies to automobiles, telephones, radios and television came in to being and there are many more people here now. But the basic fundamentals of friendship, caring for others and strong belief in Christian ideals continue to make this a good place to live. Everyone present had an en joyable time in renewing old friendships. Wadesboro. \ \ Eugenia Lynn Hardee Hardee-Matthews Eugenia Lynn Hardee, of Greenville, North Carolina, formerly of Aberdeen, announces her engagement to Donald Mat thews, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Lee Matthews, Sr. of Greenville, North Carolina. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Eugene Hardee of Greenville, North Carolina and the grand daughter of Mrs. Hugh T. Hardee, Sr. of Greenville, North Carolina and the late Hugh T. Hardee, Sr. Mr. Hardee was owner of Hardee's Tobacco Warehouses in Aberdeen. Their wedding is plann ed for August 20. Vardell Hedgpeth Honor Guest At Surprise Party Vardell Hedgpeth was honored on his fortieth birthday Monday evening, July 11, at a surprise bir thday at the Edinborough Restaurant. His wife hosted the oc casion. Guests were seated at an ap pointed table and enjoyed a delicious steak dinner with ac cessories. Just as Vardell was beginning to blow out the candles on the birth day cake, Buster Jackson, Raeford Fire Department Chief, stormed through the door in full regalia with his fire extinguisher to blow out the candles. Those present for the celebra tion other than the hostess and honored guests were their five children, Michael, Laura, Mandy, Meghan and Dickson, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Cameron, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Crowley, Mr. and Mrs. Mac Seasons, Mrs. Bessie Davis, all of Raeford, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Smith of Laurinburg, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin D*ve, Miss Denise Dove and Billy Davis of Hope Mills.
