Lumbee Co-op Board Names Pembroke As Election Site By Sherry Matthewi The Pembroke State University gymnasium has been chosen as the site for this year's Lumbee River Electric Membership Cooper ative's annual membership meeting. The decision comes despite an earlier effort by a now-disbanded membership group to have the meeting hejd elsewhere. The meeting place was voted on by the co-op's 12 directors last week. Lane Hudson, the co-op's public relations director, said board members chose the Pembroke gym because of its "central" location. "They looked at seven possible meeting places, but only two were suitable," Hudson said. According to Hudson, the Pem broke gym and the Cumberland County Memorial Auditorium in Fayetteville were the two possibilities. "We were looking for a place that would suit the needs of about 2,000 people," Hudson said. The meeting place needed to be accessible and large enough to hold that many people, Hudson added. The Pembroke location was chosen because it was the most "centrally" located facility in the four county area that the co-op serves, a press release issued Mon day said. According to Hudson, the Cumberland County Auditorium was ruled out because something else had been "tentatively" scheduled for October 18. A spokesman for the Cumberland Auditorium confirms that a tentative booking has been scheduled for the arena area, but no scheduling had been made for the auditorium. The Cumberland arena holds a maximum of 6,300 people, and the auditorium has a maxium capacity of 2,439 people. The Pembroke gym will seat 3,000 people, according to the press release. Board members are expecting some 2,000 people to be present at the meeting. According to the press release, board members felt the Pembroke gym would accommodate the ex pected turnout. Pembroke State University is located in Pembroke, some 12 miles from the intersection of Highway 74 and 1-95 in Robeson County. The purpose of the annual membership meeting is to allow members to vote on board direc tors. F our seals will be voted on during this year's meeting. Up for re-election this year are Davis Parker, director frorti District 8, J. W. Hunt, director from District 2, Timothy Strickland, director from District 4 and Gus Bullard, director from elected at large. In an unrelated matter, Martin Clark was chosen to complete the term of office vacated by Marcia Lowery of Scotland County from District 9 who resigned the posi tion in April.
