Dr. Christopher Schooley a pastoral counselor with tfe Fayetteville Family Life Center was in the pulpit for worship ser vice Sunday morning. The topic of his sermon was. "Sarah Said." Rev . Archie Barringer, pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church preach ed in Fort Bragg the past Sunday morning. This is the first time since re-entering the U.S. Army Chaplaincy. Rev. Jimmy Dees, Associate pastor was in the pulpit. His sermon topic was. "What Can We Do?" The Brotherhood. RA's. OA's and WMU General meeting will meet at the church Wednesday evening, July 27th at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, July 30th will be "Men's Work Day" at the church. The ladies will serve them lunch. Sunday evening at regular wor ship service there will be a film shown at 7:00 p.m. entitled. "Warlord For Christ." Mrs. Grace English spent several days last week at White Lake visiting her sister, Mrs. Arthur Watson and Mr. Watson. Mrs. Helen Frazier is recuperating at home following surgery at Cape Fear Valley Hospital last week. Malcolm Gillis who has been a patient at Duke Hospital is being transferred to the Veterans Ad ministration Hospital in Fayet teville. Mrs. Mary Ruth Scull of Fayet teville \isited Mrs. Louise Watson Thursday afternoon. The brothers and sisters of the late Mrs. Ruby Wood Pemberton gathered at Badain Lake July 16 for a reunion and picnic dinner in memory of Mrs. Pemberton. Those attending were Carl Pemberton and family of Greensboro. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wood and family. Mr. and Mrs. Worth Wood and family of Hope Mills, Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Calcutt and family of Pinehurst and Mrs. Earl NlcKinnon and daughter of Cumberland. Howard Wood of Tampa, Florida was unable to attend. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Barnard visited Mr. and Mrs. Emerson Ba/emore and Dr. and Mrs. Hymil lipsit? and family in Beaufort. South Carolina the past weekend. Mrs. Alfred Berry was admitted to Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayettes ille Sunday, July 1 7th and is scheduled for surgery Tuesday morning, July 26th. The contestans recipes will be judged by a panel of food experts who will determine the winner of the $500 first prize being offered by the North Carolina turkey food industry. Friendship Club Plans Meeting The Raeford Friendship Club will meet Tuesday, August 2 at 5:30 p.m. at the Raeford United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall for their annual picnic. Members are asked to bring a covered dish and iced tea. Personals Guests of Mr. and Mrs. Hallie Blythe for the day Wednesday were Mrs. Martha Stuart, Mrs. Kent Winslow and daughters, Lara Lyn and Julie from Charlotte. Mrs. Stuart is a sister of Mrs. Blythe. Mrs. Pearlie Rogers- of Raeford recently enjoyed a trip with Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Manly of Durham. They traveled to Blytheville, Arkansas, and visited several days with Mr. and Mrs. Walter Price. They then traveled to Atlanta, Georgia and spent a few days with Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Afford. While there they visited the Ben Hill United Methodist Church, the burial place of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Before returning home they visited in cities in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia. Missouri and Arkansas. Mr. and Mrs. Dean Smith of Atlanta, Georgia were weekend guests in the home of her mother, Mrs. Julian Parks. John Parks is spending the week at Camp Monroe. Mrs. Sherry Hasty spent several days last week visiting her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Hobbs in Eastlake, Ohio. Walton Beach, Florida left Mon day after a visit with his sister, Mrs. Paul Dickson and Mr. Dickson. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Ellis, Stephen, Glynda, and Rhonda at tended the Martin Family reunion in Matthews, Sunday. All bridge club members attend ed on Wednesday night at the home of Mrs. Martin Webb. Dessert was served when guests ar rived. Snacks and iced drinks were served during the evening. Mrs. Bennie Kelly was high scorer for the bridge game. Mrs. David Scott Currie received the low score award and Mrs. June Johnson won bingo. Mrs Webb Raeford Presbyterian Holding Recital July 31 There will be an Organ and Voice recital given by Ashley Burell and Lester Southern, Sun day, July 31, 4 p.m., at the Raeford Presbyterian Church. Burell will accompany Southern and perform the following organ works: Fugue a la Gigue (David N. Johnson); Morning Has Broken and Now Thank We All Our God (Paul Manz); Prelude and Fugue in G major (J.S. Bach); Sonata I: 2nd and 4th Movements (Felix Mendelssohn); La Fileuse (Marcel Dupre); and God Among Us (Olivier Messiaen). Mr. Southern will be singing sacred vocal selec tions consisting of the following: Lord God of Abraham and It is Enough from Elijah (Felix Mendelssohn); The Call (Ralph Vaughan Williams); In God is my Salvation (Richard Purvis); The Trumpet Shall Sound from Messiah (G.F. Handel); Were You There and The Blind Man Stood on the Road and Cried (H.T. Burleigh). Burell is the Organist Choirmaster at the Raeford Presbyterian Church. He has a Masters' of Music Degree in Organ Performance from the University of Montevallo, (Montevallo, Alabama). While at the University of Montevallo he received the Mahan Music Scholarship for three years, was the president of The American Guild of Organist, won the AMTA Statewide Com petition in Organ his Senior year, and was the recipient of the Margaret B. Reed Organ Award his Senior year. Burell came to Raeford last year from Mon tgomery where he was the Organist-Choirmaster at the First Presbyterian Church. Southern is a Music Instructor at Ravenscroft School in Raleigh, N.C. He is a 1974 graduate of Hoke County High School and studied voice from Mary Archie McNeill and organ from Joseph Privette while in Raeford. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from Atlantic Christian College, Wilson, N.C. While at Atlantic Christian he received the Honors Music Scholarship for 4 years, was Presi dent, Tour Director and Student Lester Southern Conductor for the college Choir, was a member of The American Guild of Organists, was Secretary Treasurer of Men's Interdorm Council, and was elected in his senior year to Who's Who in American Colleges and Univer sities and to Outstanding Young Men of America. Southern studied voice under Robert" Daniel while attending Atlantic Christian. He was also organist at First Christian Church for 3 years in Wilson. Southern began teaching at Ravenscroft in 1979 and is present ly Director of choral Music and General Music Instructor for grades 6-12. Admission to the recital is free and the public is cordially invited to attend.
