Practice has begun in full force for the Junior Varsity and Varsity Hoke
High Bucks football team. Head Coach Tom Jones said the turnout for
this year's try-outs has been "the best since I have been coaching here".
Jones said he had expected around 90 young men to come out and 88 ac
tually showed. " You can't do much better than that," Jones said. "I
don 't anticipate cutting anyone from thosf boys we already have, " Jones
said, adding that he was pleased with the Quality and experience he felt his

We have 17 returning players who started for us last year, " the coach add
ed. With a " good nuclues " of senior leadership and some fresh, young
faces among the team, Jones is optimistic about the coming season. "/ feel
like we will have the players this year that will keep us from being out
manned. I think we have the talent this year to let the breaks decide the
game. I'm optimistic that we will have a competitive season, " Jones said.
Horsley Takes Medals In Season 's Last Meet
On Saturday, August 6, Iceson
nia Horsley won two gold medals
in the 1983 McDonald's City
County Track and Field Cham
pionships.
The meet was held in
Greensboro at Grimsley High
School and was hosted by the
Greensboro Pacesetters.
Medals were given for first and
ribbons for second through fifth.
Athletes were allowed to par
ticipate in as many as five events.

Karate Class
New Location
The Tae Kwon Do Karate class sponsored by the Parks and
Recreation Commission will meet in the upper floor area (en
trance beside Howell's Drug Store) on Main Street. The class
will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-7:00. Cost
for the class is $20.00 a month instruction fee, and a $5.00 (ages
5-17) or $10.00 (18-up) insurance fee. (Insurance fee is good for
1 year from date paid). For more information, please call the

Playground Programs
Parents are reminded that the summer playground programs
sponsored by Parks and Recreation Commission will end Fri
day, August 12.
Senior Citizen Meeting
The recreation staff would like to meet with the senior citizens
of Hoke County on Wednesday, August 21 at 2:00 p.m. to
discuss ideas of potential trips and activities. All interested in
dividuals are encouraged to attend. If, however, you cannot at
tend the meeting, please call the recreation office at 875-5603
and give us your suggestions.
Ping Pong Tournament
The Parks and Recreation Commission will sponsor a Ping
Pong Tournament Wednesday, August 24, in the J.W. Turl
ington School gym. Competition will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will
conclude at 8:00 p.m.
Three tables will be set up. Each game will be played to 15
points. The winner at each table will continue to play until
he/she is defeated. Once you have been defeated you may again
enter yourself in the next available space.
The tournament winner will be determined by a playoff
among the top six participants. The top six chosen will be those
who accumulate the most wins between 6:30 and 7:30. A trophy
will be awarded to the winner.
Horse Shoe Tournament
The Parks and Recreation Commission is sponsoring a
Horseshoe Tournament on Wednesday, August 31. Competition
will begin at 5:30 p.m. on the big field adjacent to the old Na
tional Guard Armory. The top four contestants, or those who've
accumulated the most wins by 6:30 p.m. will be paired for a
championship match. Winners will continue to plav until
beaten.
Scoring will be as follows: games will be 1 1 points, only one
player scores by any inning; a shoe must be within six inches of
the stake to score; a "ringer" is a shoe that encirlces the stake
far enough to allow the touching of both heel calks
simultaneously with a straight edge, and permit a clearance of
the stake. Closest shoe to stake scores 1 point; two shoes closer
than the opponent's counts 2 points; two ringers against one for
opponent counts 3 points; one ringer and closest shoe of same
player counts 4 points. If each player has a ringer, the next
closest shoe, if within six inches of the stake, scores 1 point; a
leaning shoe has no value over one touching the stake; all equals
count as ties and no points are scored.
