Sports Coaches Name The coaching staff of Hoke High School has announced the selection of Marvin Peguese, Gwen Ellerbee, and Tina Brewer as Athletes of the Week for the week of September 19-23. Selected as Varsity Male Athlete of the Week was Marvin Peguese. Varsity Female Athlete of the Week was Gwen Ellerbee and Non Varsity Female Athlete of the Week was Tina Brewer. Marvin Peguese, a 17-year-old junior, is a member of the cross country team. Marvin was nominated for his performance in the cross country meet against Scotland, Lumberton, and Terry Sanford held at Scotland last Wednesday. Marvin finished third overall in a time of 18:39 on the muddy, wind and rain swept 5K (3.1 mile) course. Marvin's performance helped the Bucks compile an impressive victory in the quad meet. In placing third, Marvin defeated several runners from the other teams who had defeated him earlier in the season. Marvin is also an outstanding athlete in other sports as well. He is a member of the Bucks Con ference Championship Wrestling Team. Marvin wrestled in the 119 pound weight class last year and had an excellent season. He was conference champion in his weight class and was named to the Southeastern 4A All Conference Wrestling Team. Marvin also ran track last year. He competed in both the 400 meter Three Bucks run and the mile relay. Marvin is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and attend church at Walls hapel in Bomore. Marvin looks forward to a career in Business Administration and plans to attend Pembroke State to obtain a degree in that field and also to wrestle. Marvin resides with his mother, Ms. Annie Harris at 403 Crawford Wright Road in Raeford. Gwen Ellerbee, a 16-year-old sophomore is a member of Hoke's fledgling girl's cross country team and Gwen runs in the team's number one position. Gwen was nominated for her performance in the meet held on Monday at Pinecrest. Gwen, in her first 5K race and cross country As Athletes meet, placed ninth overall in a field that consisted of seasoned veteran squads from Pinecrest and Scotland. One of Gwen's favorite past times is running and she proved this as a member of the Lady Bucks track team last year. Gwen ran both the 400 and 800 meter runs. In addition to running, she en joys music, dancing and volleyball. Gwen is very active in both in school and outside activities. In school she is a member of the new ly formed ROTC program. Out side she is a member of the Usher Board at Buffalo Springs Church and secretary of the Youth Depart ment. Until recently she was also a member of the Girl Scouts. Gwen plans to further her Of The Week education upon graduation from high school by attending college to obtain a degree leading to a career in the field of nursing. Gwen resides with her parents, Mr/ and Mrs. Daniel Ellerbee at 1509 Pope Street in Raeford. Tina Brewer, a 15-year-old freshman, is a member of Junior Varsity volleyball team. Tina was nominated for her per formances in the J.V.'s three vic tories last week. Two of those vic tories came over Pinecrest and one over Reid Ross. Even though Tina played exceedingly well in all three matches, she was nominated par ticularly for her play in the Pinecrest match on Wednesday. In this match Tina served 22 of 22 balls in play for a 100% serving accuracy. From her position as set ter she also set 12 of 12 balls that could be spiked. Coach Melissa McGougan feels that Tina's excellent serving and setting was a key to the Hoke win. Tina, an all around athlete, has played three sports for the last two years at Upchurch. She played volleyball, basketball and softball. Tina was honored for her excellent play in volleyball last year by receiving the Outstanding Server Award. Upon graduation Tina plans to attend college to seek a degree in math with plans to teach on the secondary level. Tina attends South Hoke Baptist Church and resides with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Brewer at Route 1, Red Springs. Harriers Sweep -Team Meet The Hoke High cross country runners scored a victory last Wednesday on a Scotland County course, defeating four other teams to win the Southeastern AAAA meet. Buck harriers ran away with the meet, topping second place finisher Lumberton by 26 points, Scotland by 42 and Terry Sanford by 46. Hoke's Don Woods finished first with a winning time of 17:22, narrowly missing the course 16:30 record set earlier by Scotland County's Luther Everette. Woods missed breaking the record by 53 seconds. Hoke runner Marvin Peguese finished third behind Scotland County's Peter Vandenberg, who finished with a 17:29 time. TEL. 875-5752 Other Hoke players who finish ed in the top ten were Marty Locklear, who finished sixth with a 19:15 time, Billy Locklear, finishing in eighth place with a 19:50 time and Mike McPhaiter taking ninth place with a 19:54 time. In the final meet tally, Hoke had 27 points for the win, followed by Lumberton with 53, Scotland with 69 and Terry Sanford with 73. Snyder Named Top Soldier Spec. 4 Steven D. Snyder, son of Leonard Snyder and Phillis Land tree, both of Rural Route I, Ronan, Montana, has been named outstanding soldier of the month for the U.S. Army Garrison at Camp Kinser, Okinawa, Japan. The recreation department will be offering an afternoon of fun and refreshments for all Hoke County Senior Citizens. The event will take place on Wednesday, September 28 at 2 p.m. at the Recreation Office. So come on out and have some fun! Men's Volleyball Meeting The Parks and Recreation Commission will offer a men's volleyball league for all interested males 18 and up or high school graduates. An organizational meeting will be held on Wednesday, Oc tober 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the recreation office. All perspective in dividuals or team representatives should be present. Decisions will be made pertaining to rules, regulations and schedules. So, make plans to attend. Come Along To The State Fair The Parks and Recreation Commission is offering a trip to the N.C. State Fair for Senior Citizens on Monday, October 17. You must present some ID at the gate to verify your age as 65 and over. All others will need to pay a $3 admission charge at the en trance gate. Everyone must pay a $4 transportation fee to the recreation office prior to October 10 to secure a seat. Wilson Bus Company will provide the transportation. The trip will be limited to the first 45 paying persons to register. For more information contact the recreation office at Volleyballers Win 2 of 3, JV Retains Perfect Record The Hoke High girls' varsity volleyball team swept past two of three opposing squads last week boosting their record to 5-3 for the season. In last Tuesday's home game against Reid Ross, the varsity squad wiped out their opponents 15-2, 15-0 and won the match 2-0. The Junior Varsity team, with a perfect season record of 8-0, also mowed down Reid Ross winning both games 15-1, 15-9. In Wednesday's home game, both Hoke teams scored victories, edging out Pinecrest 2-0 and 2-0 in both matches. The varsity girls pulled down a two game win, defeating Pinecrest 15-12, 15-5; while the J.V. team held firmly to their undefeated position, winning 15-7, 15-3. Hoke's J.V. squad scored another win Thursday in an away game against Pinecrest, and the varsity team suffered a loss. The J.V. team took an apparent ly easy two-game win over Pinecrest defeating them 15-5, 15-3. The varsity squad held their own, but were edged out in the final minutes of the game losing by a narrow margin 13-15, 12-15. The Eagles lone touchdown was scored by Robert McLean on a 60 yard run. The conversion was added by Michael Chavis. The Eagles tried very hard, but did not have the winning combina tion. The Eagles will be at home this Wednesday against the Hamlet Red Rams. The game will start at 4 p.m.Jat the Hoke High Stadium. Literacy Workshops To Be Held In October The Adult Basic Education Pro gram at Sandhills Community Col lege will offer a series of literacy tutor training workshops during the first two weeks in October. Barbara Buie, Director of the Hoke Reading-Literacy Council, will be the instructor. The workshop will teach pro spective tutors to use the famous Laubach Method of reading in struction. This method has befcn used all over the world to teatfi reading. It was developed by Dr. Frank Laubach who saw the need to teach reading to the masses. The workshops will be held in the Old County Office Building -in Raeford on Oct. 3 and 5, and ag?n on Oct. 9 and 12. They will fij|n from 6:30 until 9:30 p.m. ^
