School News Learning about Indian heritage Seventy-six members of the H est Hoke School first grade learn about the American Indian during American Indian Heritage Week. The week was highlighted by the students dressing up as American Indians and traveling back in time. Shown here are Mrs. C. U'ilkerson's Class (top), P. West Hoke Students Study Indian Heritage On September 23, the third grade classes of West Hoke School visited places of interest in Pem broke. The trip was a climax to a week of activities in observance of American Indian Heritage Week. The first stop was a park near the amphitheater where "Strike At The Wind" is performed each summer. After a short time for recrea tion, the group toured the am phitheater. Earl Oxendine, who helped with planning the trip, gave a short and informative talk on the theater and the characters in the drama. The next stop was the Indian Museum at Pembroke State University. The students saw a movie, "North Carolina Indians, 65,000 Strong," then visited the exhibits in the museum. Many crafts were displayed, along with pictures, old im plements, arrowheads and spears. Of special interest were several stuffed animals, a tobacco barn and a canoe. After the museum tour, everyone enjoyed a picnic lunch at the city park. A tired and happy group then climbed aboard the buses for the return trip. Hoke Highlights By Donna Baker The Marching Band competed this past Saturday at Seventy-First High School. They received first place colorguard, first place drum line, second place drum majors and second place overall band. They also received a superior rating. The majority of the crowd was in support of Hoke High and their enthusiasm was greatly ap preciated. The band will be com peting this Saturday in North Wilkesboro. . The National Honor Society held induction ceremonies Tues day, September 27. The new members are Wanda Chason and Mike Dennis, seniors, Linda Glisson and John Ward. Con gratulations. The Beautyshop Singers held a yard sale and a bake sale the past two Saturdays to help raise money for sweaters. A special thanks to those who participated. Homecoming is coming up ?n two weeks. There are a lot of ac tivities planned for Homecoming week. 1 urge everyone to sign up for all the activities. Hoke Edition West Hoke's 29 newspaper reporters traveled to the Audio Visual Office September 29. The reporters, accompanied by Mrs. C. Wilkerson, Mrs. Monroe, Mrs. Wood and Ms. Hurst, were given a guided tour by AV coor dinator Glenn Langdon and Lynn Maxwell. . Having participated in this ac tivity the students will be able to prepare their own school newspaper. The West Hoke School s first edition will be distributed November 4. Thomas Arrives For Hawaii Duty Spec. 4 Vernon D. Thomas, son of Vernon D. and Suzanna K. Thomas of Rural Route 1, Aber deen, has arrived for duty at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. Thomas, an electrician with the U.S. Army Western Command, was previously assigned at Fort Polk, La. He is a 1981 graduate of Westover Senior High School, Fayetteville. Mary Archie McNeill, director of cultural arts, and Marilyn Semones, director of instruction cooperated with Elizabeth Burgess, county Librarian, In arranging for the workshop and con tacting teachers to participate in the workshop. Morehead Nominees Chosen \ By Flora Macdonald Academy Eugene L. McKethan, head master of Flora Macdonald Academy, announced Monday the selection of Cynthia Lynn Gibson and Susan Norris McKay as nominees for the University of North Carolina John Motley Morehead Scholarship Awards. Both candidates will graduate from F.M.A. in June. Since 1945 students have been chosen through a selection com mittee process to receive these prestigious honorary scholarship awards for undergraduate studies at U.N.C. - Chapel Hill. The 1983-84 grants will be ap proximately $6,500 for North Carolina residents. Selection is based on scholastic ability, extra curricular attainments, leadership capabilities, participation in com petitive sports and personal character. McKay is currently president of the Student Government Council and holds membership in the Beta Club, Drama Club and Science Club. She is editor of the academy newspaper and plays on the tennis team. Susan has won the D.A.R. American History Award, Wood man of the World History Award and the D.A.R. Good Citizen Award. She is listed in the Society of Distinguished American High School Students and was chief marshal at the academy during her junior year. Susan is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William A. McKay of St. Pauls. She is an active member of the St. Pauls Presbyterian Church. Gibson has served as vice presi dent of the Beta Club, secretary of the junior class and photographer for the school newspaper. She is a C>9?< s? member of the academy math team, French Club, Science Club, Society of Distinguished American High School Students and is cur rently treasurer of the Drama Club. In sports, she is a member of the girl's basketball and tennis teams and was recipient of the All-Star Award. She served as a class mar shal during her junior year at the academy. Cynthia is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David B. Gibson of Raeford. She takes an active role in activities at the Raeford Presbyterian Church where she is a member. During October, Cynthia and Susan will compete with other can didates from other high schools in Robeson County for nomination to the District Selection Committee in November. Glviuttf, Oil Go>.
