were Installed for the coming year last Thursday night.

Kiwanis Taps New Officers
Officers and directors of the
Raeford Kiwanis Club, who were
installed Thursday night, will be
piloting the club through its 60th
year of service to the local com
munity.
The ceremonies were held at the
Raeford Civic Center and Division
Lt. Gov. Harold Gillis conducted
the installations.
The new officers are: President,
John Leandro; President-Elect,
Wendell Young; Vice-President,
John Howard; Secretary
Treasurer, Dorsey Short. Direc
tors: (2-year term) Bobby Conoly,
Warren Johnston, Jimmy Wood,
and David Warren; (1-year term)
James Attaway, John Currie,
Steve Parker, and Earnest Sutton.
The club recently voted to elect a
Presidcnt-Elect and to have eight
directors on a one and two year
term instead of electing seven new
directors each year.
Harold L. Gillis, the Lt. Gov.,
was recently installed in Green
ville, South Carolina to serve dur
ing the administrative year, Oc
tober 1 - September 30th.
The theme for Kiwanis Interna
tional and the local clubs is "Seek
the Widening Path", and the ma
jor emphasis program is entitled
"Enrich The World of The Han
dicapped".
Gillis is a member of the
Raeford Kiwanis Club where he
has served as director, Vice
President, and Chairman of
several committees, including Pro
gram Chairman for several years.

He has been a Kiwanian for some
23 years and holds perfect atten
dance for over 20 years.
The Lt. Governor's primary
reponsibility is for the health and
direction of Kiwanis goals and ob
jectives within Division seven. He
is one of more than 700 Lieutenant
Governors servicing Kiwanis
world-wide. Division seven is com
posed of 12 clubs, and this division
is a part of the Garolinas District
(North and South Carolina) which
has 19 divisions.
President Leandro will lead the
Raeford Kiwanis Club in service to
this community.
Plans and committee appoint
ments have already been made to
work with many worthwhile pro
jects.
Assisting with the Halloween
Carnival for the TMH children
and their parents, the annual Pan
cake Supper and Raffle are just
several things that have been plan
ned.
The annual ladies night has
already been set for February 19,
1984, and some special recognition
will be given to the club's 60 years
of service.
A club which has traditionally
worked for the betterment of this
community has 40 active members
who come from a varied
background of business and educa
tional experience.
During the past several years the
club has been fortunate to have
young leaders to join which will
assist the more experienced
members to do even a better job of
service.
Carnival
Plans Set
With Halloween less than four
weeks away, preparations are be
ing made for the annual ghost and
goblin carnival being held October
29 at Upchurch Junior High
School.
The carnival will feature enter
tainment booths, dunking booths,
a "car smash", and a new addi
tion, the "haunted space shuttle"
ride.
"There will be something for
everyone to enjoy," Carnival coor
dinator Jimmy Wood said.
Along with the "fun" booths,
Wood also said that there would be
craft exhibits and demonstrations.
The Raeford Woman's Club will
be featuring a Country Store and
will be selling canned fruits and
vegetables.
In addition, Fred Smith, a wood
furniture designer and local potter
Jim Moses, will be on hand to
show their wares and demonstrate
their talents, Wood said.
The carnival will also feature a
costume judging contest for all
those dressed their most ghoulish.
People attending the Halloween
activities will also have a chance at
winning other prizes by purchasing
SI raffle tickets.
A bicycle will be one of the
many prizes given away during the
event.
There is no admission to the car
nival, but there will be a "donation
brew kettle" for those who wish to
contribute.
Proceeds from the carnival will
go to the Upchurch and Hoke
High Trainable Mentally Han
dicapped students. Wood said.
"It is a very worthwhile cause,"
Wood said.
"You can come out here and
have a lot of fun, and help some
one at the same time," Wood add
ed.
The Raeford Kiwanis Club, the
Raeford Jaycees and Jaycettes, the
Boy Scouts and the Hoke County
Civic League, "along with many
others," are supporting the Hallo
ween carnival, according to Wood.
"This whole thing is a combined
county-wide effort among civic
and service organizations to help a
good cause," Wood said.
The carnival will start at 5 p.m.
on Saturday, October 29.
Everyone is encouraged to come
out and support this project,
Wood said.
Weaver Arrives
F or German Duty
Sgt. James J. Weaver, son of
George L. and Mary M. Weaver of
1751 W. Kemper Road, Cincin
nati, has arrived for duty in
Eschborn, West Germany.
Weaver, a combat engineer with
the 130th Engineer Brigade, was
previously assigned at Fort Knox,
Kentucky.
His wife, Rene, is the daughter
of Winston and Jean McClain of
Rural Route 2, Raeford.
The sergeant is a 1978 graduate
of Forest Park High School, Cin
cinnati.
