Firemen honored Over 250 firemen, wives, and guests were on hand Thursday night for barbeque dinner and were treated to a speech by Vice-chairman of the the annual Chamber of Commerce Firemen's Dinner in honor of the North Carolina Fireman's Commission R.L. Powell. Powell is also local firefighters. The dinner and the parade on Saturday were all part Chief of the Greensboro Fire Department. of a week 's activities honoring National Fire Week. Firemen enjoyed a Man Sentenced For Assault On Officer A Raeford man, charged with four counts of assault with a dead ly weapon and one count of assaulting a police officer, was sentenced to two years in prison during Hoke County District Court proceedings last week. Benjie Allen Stephens, 27, of 520 East Sixth Avenue, who has been in and out of the Hoke Jail since July, plead guilty to the assault charges and was given con sective sentences of no less than six months and no more than 12 in each of the four cases. Stephens' stints in jail began July 3 when he was arrested by deputies after he had apparently robbed James Henegan and threatened violence with a knife, records show. During the robbery, Stephens apparently took a large amount of cash and food stamps. According to court records, Stephens also assaulted Raeford Police Officer J.R. McNeill, who was attempting to take Stephens into custody for the robbery. Although Stephens was released from jail under a $10,000 bond on July 8, he was arrested again on September 2 on similar assault charges, but was released three days later. Sheriff's records indicate that Stephens was jailed again September 14 on additional assault charges. The defendant remained in the Hoke Jail until last Friday when he was transported to the North Carolina Central Prison in Raleigh. During court Friday, Stephens also plead guilty to three addi tional counts of misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon. One of those charges had been reduced from robbery with a dangerous weapon. In that case, Stephens was con victed of taking about $8 in coins from Betty Wall while threatening her with a knife. Judge Joseph Dupree gave Stephens his third consecutive six month sentence for those charges. Two other charges against Stephens, both assault with a dead ly weapon arrests, were con solidated by Judge Dupree who gave the defendant a fourth six month sentence to run at the ex piration of the others. In those cases, Stephens had ap parently struck James Blue with a pocket knife, cutting his ear, and had apparently assaulted Patrick Fellows with a "Thunderbird" wine bottle. Stephens was taken to Raleigh Friday afternoon by Hoke Sheriff's deputies. He is expected to serve no less than two years and no more than four years for the five crimes. In other court action, a High Point man was given a 12-month suspended sentence on charges that he falsely obtained over $300 in food stamps from the Hoke Department of Social Services. James W. Bell of High Point, who was charged with food stamp fraud, apparently obtained $384 in food stamps without disclosing factual income information. Reports show that Bell's wife owns over $2,000 in property, had over $200 in a joint checking ac count, and received a $262 disabili ty check. Records show that Bell ap parently failed to report these in come figures to the Hoke DSS. Judge Dupree ordered the defen dant to spend no less than six months and no more than 12 mon ths in the Hoke Jail on those charges. Dupree suspended that sentence for two years with supervised pro bation. Bell must also pay a $100 court cost and $384 in restitution. In an unrelated incident, a Fayetteville man was given a six month sentence on two larceny charges in District Court Friday. Calvin B. Davis, 34, of Fayet teville plead guilty to charges that he had apparently taken 48 cartons of cigarettes, two packs of bathroom tissue and one bag of potato chips, valued at $311.69, from the Raeford Food Lion. ? Davis also plead guilty to a se cond September 13 larceny at Sky City where $120.21 in merchandise was taken. Davis apparently had taken 16 cartons of cigarettes and a bottle of shampoo from the Sky City store. Judge Dupree consolidated the two larceny charges and ordered Davis confined to the Hoke Jail for no less than six months and no more than six months. In further court action. Jack Douglas Compton of Mebane plead guilty to speeding (66-55) and was given a prayer for judge ment on that charge. William Shaw of Fayetteville plead guilty to driving under the influence (DUI) and was given a six-month suspended sentence and was instructed to surrender his license for 12 months. Shaw was also ordered to pay $250 and court cost. Tyron Harvey Thorson of Charlotte plead guilty to exceeding a safe speed and was ordered to pay cost in the action. Matthew Lorenza Kearns of Rt. 2, Raeford, plead guilty to DUI charges and was given a six-month suspended sentence and was ordered to surrender his license for 12 months. Judge Dupree also ordered Kearns to pay $250 and court cost. Howard Kenneth Johnson of Rt. 3, Raeford, plead guilty to DUI charges and was given a 90-day s suspended sentence. Judge Dupree suspended Johnson's license but granted him a limited driving permit. Johnson was also instructed by the judge to enroll and complete the alcohol and drug abuse school within 90 days and pay $150 and court cost in the action. Annie Eleanor Douglas of Rt. 2, Raeford plead guilty to DUI charges and was given a 90-day suspended sentence. Douglas was also instructed to surrender her license for 12 months and pay $150 and court cost. Hazel Thomas Massey of Hope Mills plead guilty to exceeding a safe speed and was instructed to pay cost in the action.
