Burlington Plans 1984 Modernization Citing increased profits in an im proving economy, despite lower selling prices, Burlington In dustries Chairman and Chief Ex ecutive Officer William A. Klop miui said in the company's 1983 annual report that "it is evident our aggressive modernization and cost reduction programs are pay ing off." Klopman said the Greensboro based company's market leader ship, manufacturing superiority, product innovation and quality have prepared Burlington for the future, and that 1984 is expected to be a good year. "Over the past decade, Burling ton has become a leaner, more focused and more productive com pany," he said. Klopman at tributed the company's dramatic increases in productivity (over 5% per year for the past 10 years) to heavy investments in the most modern and flexible manufactur ing facilities available. "In 1984, we anticipate capital spending of approximately $220 million," he said. "Burlington is moving toward the automated fac tory concept, which links com puterized production planning, modern manufacturing equip ment, automated materials hand ling systems and process control." Klopman said the benefit from this concept will mean improved management of production pro cesses and greater flexibility in meeting changing demands for now textile products. The 1984 capital spending figure is the third highest in the company's history. Burlington has spent over SI. 5 billion on capital projects in the past seven years. Regarding the current U.S. economic picture and the world trade situation, Klopman said the "twin deficit problems, in the federal budget and in foreign trade, continue to overshadow the chances for a sustained economic recovery." He said textile and apparel im ports to the U.S. grew more than 20% in 1983, and based on an average of 100,000 employees per one billion square yards of textile products, the year's import surge eliminated 140,000 jobs in the United States. Part of the problem, Klopman said, is that existing U.S. laws designed to prevent unfair trade practices by foreign nations are not always enforced consistently and firmly. Burlington's 1983 sales were $2.99 billion, up 4% from 1982. Net earnings were $3.10 per share, 68% higher than 1982 results. Apparel fabrics divisions, representing 60% of the company's sales, achieved better results in 1983. An upturn in hous ing starts and lower interest rates stimulated increased demand for Burlington's home furnishing pro ducts, which account for 32% of sales. The industrial fabrics group began to show strength in the latter part of the year, as the economic recovery brought improved business to the country's industrial sector. Burlington is the nation's largest and most diversified manufacturer of textiles and related products for apparel, the home and industry. The company has 85 plants in the U.S. and 11 plants in four other countries, and employs 53,000 people. Brighten discolored aluminum pots and pans by boiling apple peelings in them.
