Famous Black North Carolinians Being Featured In Radio Spots Black North Carolinians have made major contributions in many fields from education and religion to law and the arts, and their specific efforts are outlined in a series of 30-second spot an nouncements being aired on radio stations statewide. These announcements will be heard throughout February, accor ding to Annette Gibbs, project coordinator. Among people and events discussed in the series, which covers the time period from the early 19 century to the present, are the original civil rights sit-ins in Greensboro in J 960 by several black college students. Others featured are Charles Waddell Chesnutt, of Fayetteville, who was a lawyer, educator and the first distinguished black American novelist; Elreta M. Alex ander of Smithfield, the first black woman to graduate from Colum bia University Law School, and the first black woman to practice law and to try a case in the N.C. Supreme Court. Additionally she is the 'first black female judge elected in the United States. Also included is Henry Frye of Ellerbc, educator, legislator and lawyer, and the first black ever to sit on the N.C. Supreme Court. Others in the serfes are several prominent in the education field including Charlotte Hawkins Brown, who was founder and for 50 years, director of the Palmer In stitute in Sedalia; John Chavis of Oxford, educator and minister; and Clarence "Bighouse" Gaines of Winston-Salem State Universi ty, who has won more basketball games (more than 700) and more league championships than any other coach in the C.I. A. A. (Cen tral Intercollegiate Athletic Association). More North Carolinians in the series are George Moses Horton, who was born a slave, educated himself and became a poet as well as the first black from North Carolina to publish a volume of poetry. John Coltrane of Hamlet became one of the world's most ac complished musicians, and was named "Jazzman of the Year" in 1962. Romare Bearden of Charlotte is considered the leading coliagist among American artists today, and his work has been shown at leading art galleries in the United States and Europe. Black businessmen are responsi ble for one of the nation's largest black-owned and operated businesses. North Carolina Mutual Insurance Company, founded in 1899 in Durham. Founders include John Merrick, a former slave; physician Aaron McDuffie Moore and their first employee, Charles C. Spaulding. Noted in that era are Henry Cheatham; John A. Hyman; Henry Eppes; James O'Hara; and George H. White, an ex-slave and lawyer. In 1901 White became North Carolina's last black U.S. Congressman. Also featured on the public ser vice announcements are the several religious denominations that founded black colleges, including Shaw University (Baptist); Johnson C. Smith (Presbyterian); St. Augustine (Episcopalian); Ben nett College (Methodist); and Liv ingstone College (A.M.E. Zion). Safety suggestion winner Johnny B. Graham is the Safety Suggestion Winner at the Burl ington Industries Raeford Plant for the month of February. Kevin Davis Joins Heritage As Loan Officer Kevin Davis has joined the Raeford staff of Heritage Federal Savings and Loan Association, President Fred A. Parker and Vice President Frank Teal announced this week. Davis will be serving as a loan officer. Before joining Heritage, Kevin was with United Carolina Bank at Fayetteville. He graduated from Hoke Coun ty High School and received a B.S. in Industrial Relations from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a member of Raeford Presbyterain Church where he sings in the choir. He is single and lives in Raeford.
