Bucks End Season,
Head For Tourney
The Hoke High Varsity Bucks
finished regular season play last
week with an 11-11 season record
and a 6-8 conference record.
The varsity basketball squad
placed fifth in the conference and
takes on Lumberton Tuesday night
in the first round of 4-A con
ference play.
"1 feel real good about the game
against Lumberton," Head Coach
Greg Killingsworth said.
"We had one of the best prac
tices we have had all year Monday
night. I think that is a good sign,"
he added.
Although Killingsworth is "op
timistic" about his squads chances
of defeating Lumberton, the Hoke
Bucks lost to the same opponents
during home court action last Fri
day night.
The Lumberton team came from
behind Friday night to down the
Bucks by 19 points.
"It was hard for us. It was our
last home game of th? season,"
Killingsworth said.
The Bucks, who started all their
senior players during the first
quarter, came off the bench
"hot."
"We had a 21-13 lead in the first
quarter and a 37-33 lead at the
half," Killingsworth said.
"We did the same thing we have
been doing all year long... we relax
ed for a second and the ballgame
got turned around." he added.
According to the head coach, a
"real bad lapse" in the third
quarter gave the Lumberton team
an advantage that they "capitaliz
ed on."
"We let them back in the
ballgame and then we got in foul
trouble," Killingsworth said.
"After that, they took us out of
the game real quick," he added.
"We had to change to their
game plan," the head coach noted.
Despite the 76-57 loss, Kill
ingsworth said his team was
prepared for the rematch.
"They were really fired up dur
ing our practice," Killingsworth
said.
"I am pretty confident about
this game.
Although the Bucks lost their
final home game last Friday night,
they did pull off a 50-47 victory
during play last Tuesday night
against West Robeson.
"Our boys came through splen
didly during the game," Kill
ingsworth said.
Again, Killingsworth admits
that the game was won from the
free throw line.
"The boys came through when it
was needed the most. The final
score proves that," Killingsworth
said.
Buck player Tony McRae was
lead scorer with 13 points while
Barriett Easterling added 12.
