'February was special for West Hoke pupils ? It is doubtful that Julius Caesar or Augustus would have removed the extra days from February had they suspected what a historical month it would have become. February, derived from the Latin word, Februaries which means to purify, is not only the shortest month of the year, but the most eventful. ^ Evidence of this was portrayed ^>y Ethelyn Baker's (assisted by Elease Tew) and Louise Barnwell's (assisted by Bettye Hendrix) third grade classes as they presented an assembly program to the pricipal, faculty, staff, parents and patrons of West Hoke School on February 22. The program, entitled, A ^ebruary Special consisted of poetry, drama and music. As the curtain opened, the eager and enthusiastic third graders lifted their voices in song as they proudly sang our National An them. Following the pledge of allegiance, the program continued as the students eloquently revealed history in their presentation of Langston Hughes' "Mother to Son". Directed by the music teacher, Miriam McNeil, the students again blended their voices as they sang Jacob's Ladder, followed by a skit, "Science or Superstition" which depicted the old legend of the groundhog predicting the weather. An original song, Super Superstitions highlighted the meaning of the legend. The program continued with presentations such as a choral reading, "Abraham Lincoln Speaks," followed by the Battle Hymn of the Republic, a biographical sketch of Frederick Douglass, "Lift Every Voice and Sing"; a biographical sketch of Susan B. Anthony, a fighter for women's right to vote. Nine to Five, a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr. and a song of the same ti tle, a parade of Black women of valor, God Bless America; a choral reading, Washington, relating the character of our First President and followed by Yankee Doodle. February is not complete without a message from Cupid. To illustrate what a great impact Cupid has upon our links, the students finalized their program with a playlet, "Cupid In Com mand." As the students took their final bows, and the audience observed their radiant faces, there was no doubt that February is historical, eventful and exciting.
