Dalton takes
thirdplace
in ski meet
David Dalton placed third in his
first water ski tournament.
The tournament was held Sun
day, May 27 at Lake Kristi in
Greenville.
Dalton competed in the slalom
event sponsored by Overtons and
Connelly Skis.
Dalton was tied for third place
and won the tournament handily in
a ski-off giving him sole possession
of third place.
Other skiers in attendance were
Kristi Overton, national junior
girls champion and Mike
Hazel wood, former world cham
pion.
Dalton plans to compete in more
tournaments this summer.
Pittman Grove
captures fourth
The Pittman Grove "Raider"
won their 4th win in a row, rolling
past Lagrande 21-3.
Leading the 20-hit attack was M.
Madden 5-5 with one home run, J.
Madden 3-5, R. Shepley with one
home run 3-5, T. Clark 2-4 and P.
Manning 2-4.
Pittman Grove plays again at
home next Monday against last
year's first place LaFayette team.
Both teams are undefeated.

Heart Assoc . tourney on tap for June 13
The Hoke County Heart
Association will conduct the first
stage of play in the Southern Na
tional Bank/Heart Association
Pro- Am Golf Tournament on June
13 at the Arabia Golf Club,
spokesman Rebecca Smith said.
The tournament is open to
amateur women and men of all
ages in teams of four.
An 18-hole best net 2 of 4 balls
format will be used, with the win
ning fouT$drae?iigibte to advance
to the Pro-Am Golf Champion
ship, Pinehurst, where they will
compete for a $5,000 purse.
The championship will be held
at Midpines Resort on August 17,
18, and 19.
The Carolina Section of the Pro
fessional Golfers Association will
invite golf professionals to com
pete with the amateur teams. The
PGA has sanctioned the. Cham
pionship. A maximum certified
handicap of 18 will be allowed at
Midpines.
Entry forms may be picked up at
the following locations: Southern

Company - Tom Howell; and,

An entry fee of $100 (S25 per
person) will be charged.
The entry fee is charged only at
the local level of the tournament

Over 55 players from the sur
rounding area and South Carolina
participated in the Fifth Annual
Tennis Classic held last weekend at
McLauchlin Park in Raeford and
at Deer Track Racquet Club.
Players from as far as Pickens,
South Carolina took part in the
event which was sponsored by the
Hoke Tennis Association.

Recreation Bits
Co-ed volleyball
For those interested in a Co-Ed Volleyball League, an
organizational meeting will be held on Thursday, June 7 at 7:00
p.m in the Recreation Office. To be eligible players must be a
high school graduate and up, or age equivalent. Teams will be
limited to 12 members. Competition will involve 3 females and 3
males. Interested teams should send a team representative. If
you are interested in playing, but not a member of a team you
are encouraged to attend the meeting.
Swimming lessons
The Recreation Department will be offering beginner, advanc
ed beginner, and intermediate swimming lessons for all in
terested County residents. Betsy Collins will be the instructor
and the sessions will be held at 1004 Fulton Street at Mrs. Milo
Poster s Pool.
Two sessions will be offered, each running a period of two
weeks. The first session will begin on Monday, June 18 and will
end on Friday, June 29. The second session will begin on Mon
day, July 9 and will end on Friday, July 20.
Classes for both sessions will be offered as follows: 1-1 :4S
p.m. Beginners; 1:43-2:30 Advanced Beginners; 2:30-3:15 In-,
termediate; 3:13-4 p.m. Beginners. Each class will consist of on
ly 5 students. For those ages 6-18 the cost will be $20, for those
ages 19-up the fee will be S23.00. (Fees include mandatory in
surance, instruction and chemical expense). Registration is on a
first come, first serve basis on Saturday, June 9 at 10 a.m. in the
Recreation Office. (New location - OLD National Guard Ar
mory Building). All parents MUST accompany their child. (In
surance forms and emergency information needed).
. Karate
For those interested in the martial arts, classes are currently
being held in the room above Howell's Drug Store on Main
Street . Classes are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30-7_p.m.
Cost is $25 per month for instruction plus insurance fee. ($5 for
ages 18 and under, $10 for those 19 years of older. Insurance is
good for one year from date paid, and needs to be turned in at
the Recreation Office). For more information, contact the

Men's softball results
The Recreation Commission's Men's Softball League con
tinued action on Tuesday, May 29 at Armory Park. The first
game of the night matched 21 1 Auto Shop against the Raeford
Jaycees. 21 1 Auto won the game in a 6-2 decision as they were
led by the following hitters: A. Walker hit 2-2, T. Bridges 2-3,
and W. Walker was 1-3. The Jaycees were powered by the hit
ting of E. Ramsey 2-3, S. Knox 2-3, and R. Wilcox was 1-3.
In the second game, Boahn Concrete downed Hard and
Heavy 8-5. H. Thompson was 4-4, W. Johnson 2-3, and D.
McNeill was 2-4 to lead the Jaycees in hitting. Hard and Heavy's
leading batters were: L. McDonald 3-4, G. Hollingsworth 2-3,
and A. Thomas 1-3.
In Thursday night's action, the All Stars defeated Hard and
Heavy 15-9. M. McDougal hit 3-4, & Wallace was 3-5, and R.
Maynor was 2-3 (both hits were home runs) to lead the All Stars
in hitting. Hard and Heavy's leading batters were R. Leggett
2-5, L. McDonald 2-4, and A. Thomas 2-3. The final game of
the week matched Boahn Concrete against 211 Auto. Boahn
Concrete pounded out a 12-2 victory as they were led by the hit
ting of R. Cooke, who hit 3-3, R. Boahn 3-3, T. Hawkes was
2-4, M. Lewis 2-4 and H. Thompson hit 2-4. 211 Auto Shop's
leading batters were Q. Breeden 1-1, W. Breeden 1-2 and W.
Walker 1-2.
