Writing course offered at Sandhills College The Division of Continuing Education at Sandhills Communi ty College will offer for the first time a unique writing course for teachers and non-teachers the week of June 25-29. The course, "Relaxing into Writing: Some Strategies for Com position" will be taught by veteran SCC English instructor and author Sharon Shaw. A minimum of lecture will em phasize expository writing. The process of writing - approach, planning, drafts, editing, produc ing the finished product - is at the heart of the course. The course will include a look at some theory: What is a writer? Who do people write? How is writing most effec tively taught and/or learned? How does criticism impact on writing? Participants will also have con tinual verbal reaction from col leagues and the instructor plus the option to have written instructor reactions to three pieces of ex pository writing. The course will provide students with an increased awareness of the process of writing, ideas about the "philosophy" of composition, and a sense of self as writer. Teachers will receive ? sense of how student writers go at their work and possi ble ideas about the teaching of compotition. The class is designed to be par ticipant oriented with a maximum amount of interchange between students and the instructor. Instructor Sharon Shaw has taught composition at East Carolina, UNC-Chapel Hill, Fort Bragg, Pembroke State, the University of Saskatchewan, and Jahanzeb College in West Pakistan. She is the author of a book of poems, and her critical work has appeared in PMLA, Modern Fiction Studies, and the BuckneU Review. This class will meet in Room K-14S on the SCC campus from 1-5 p.m. on June 25-29. The cost of the class is $10. Two CEU's will be available for teacher recertifica tion. Students may register at the first meeting of class. Sallie Mac, the former SaOie Mac Johnson, and a native of Hok * County, graduated from Hoke High School and East Carolina University. She taught for seven years at South Hoke School. Mayo Arnold, a native of Harriett County, commuted daily from LUlington to Hoke County. He taught for six years at South Hoke School, these two teachers were remembered for their years of service in the field of education and their contribution to South Hoke School. Developed by Germany's Carl Orff, the program operates with the philosophy that children must feel and be a part of music to get the full benefit from it. The workshop was held last week at the Hoke County Library and included music students from Pem broke and East Carolina University as well a\ musk teachers from public and private schools from as far away as Wilson. Instructor, Mrs. Barbara B. Balr (left in skirt) guides some of her pupils through a dance while the rest of the group plays the music for the dance on xylophones and recorders. Mrs. Bair, an Associate Professor of Music at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, said she was very pleased with the enrollment in the course. " 7 have never worked with a group that b more enthusiastic or more qualified, " she said. Many of the group 's participants voiced approval of the program saying that It will be a great learning experience for young students.
