Writing course offered
at Sandhills College
The Division of Continuing
Education at Sandhills Communi
ty College will offer for the first
time a unique writing course for
teachers and non-teachers the week
of June 25-29.
The course, "Relaxing into
Writing: Some Strategies for Com
position" will be taught by veteran
SCC English instructor and author
Sharon Shaw.
A minimum of lecture will em
phasize expository writing. The
process of writing - approach,
planning, drafts, editing, produc
ing the finished product - is at the
heart of the course. The course will
include a look at some theory:
What is a writer? Who do people
write? How is writing most effec
tively taught and/or learned? How
does criticism impact on writing?
Participants will also have con
tinual verbal reaction from col
leagues and the instructor plus the
option to have written instructor
reactions to three pieces of ex
pository writing.
The course will provide students
with an increased awareness of the
process of writing, ideas about the
"philosophy" of composition, and
a sense of self as writer. Teachers
will receive ? sense of how student
writers go at their work and possi
ble ideas about the teaching of
compotition.
The class is designed to be par
ticipant oriented with a maximum
amount of interchange between
students and the instructor.
Instructor Sharon Shaw has
taught composition at East
Carolina, UNC-Chapel Hill, Fort
Bragg, Pembroke State, the
University of Saskatchewan, and
Jahanzeb College in West
Pakistan. She is the author of a
book of poems, and her critical
work has appeared in PMLA,
Modern Fiction Studies, and the
BuckneU Review.
This class will meet in Room
K-14S on the SCC campus from
1-5 p.m. on June 25-29. The cost

Teachers in their spare time
These area teachers are taking part in what is known as an " Orff
Workshop." Developed by Germany's Carl Orff, the program
operates with the philosophy that children must feel and be a part of
music to get the full benefit from it. The workshop was held last week
at the Hoke County Library and included music students from Pem
broke and East Carolina University as well a\ musk teachers from
public and private schools from as far away as Wilson. Instructor,
Mrs. Barbara B. Balr (left in skirt) guides some of her pupils through a
dance while the rest of the group plays the music for the dance on
xylophones and recorders. Mrs. Bair, an Associate Professor of Music
at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, said she was very
pleased with the enrollment in the course. " 7 have never worked with a
group that b more enthusiastic or more qualified, " she said. Many of
the group 's participants voiced approval of the program saying that It
will be a great learning experience for young students. The program
was sponsored by the Hoke County Board of Education .
