oke students to attend conference
Hoke County students will be
prwent when activities begin at
Evergreen State College in Olym
pia, Washington, the site of
Laubach Literacy Action's 1984
Conference.
Highlights of the conference will
include keynote speaker Shirley
Chisholm (former U.S. Represen
tative D-N.Y.) filmmaker
Christopher Jeans, a celebration of
Frank Laubach's 100th birthday,
and an auction of Philippine art
crafts and computer literacy.
Representing Hoke Read
ing/Literacy Council is Wayne
McMHlian, Bobby Peterkin and
Lcnnon Ransom, students of the
local council.
In an informal reception held
for the students on Tuesday, dub
bed "Our Students Are Going
Places", project director Barbara
Buie, said "The goal of literacy
education is to prepare adult
students for full participation in
their society." A congratulatory
statement from Representative
Danny DeVane was shared at that
time.
This being the first flight for all
the men. Volunteer tutor Anne
Jordan had planned lessons so that
their would be no problems in the
busy Atlanta Airport, to help them
select seminars and to make sure
that the trip was an enjoyable
learning experience.
Lutheran Church Women
selected The Hoke County Council
and offered them the opportunity
to send students to Washington.
Using an informal merit system
that included participation, in
terest, and student's goals Buie ap
proached the adult students show
ing them Olympia, Wahington, on
the map in relationship to Fayet
teville and they agreed to go.
"Only those closest to the coun
cil can know how grateful we are
to Lutheran Church Women. We
believe that this type of tangible
reward can motivate other students
to participate," said the director.
She added, "We would like to
thank Miss Ethilynde Ballace and
Joseph Danders for the donations
that allowed the council to help the
students with registration, room
and board and the many citizens of
Hoke County who have supported
over six years of literacy efforts."
