. . . Around Town continued (Continued from page 1) Thank you for letting me share some of my feelings for "home." Sincerely, Gladdie The above letter was from Mrs. Harry Harrison, nee Gladdie Baucom of Raeford. She now lives in Raleigh. Her other letter follows: Dear Sir: As a Raeford native, I wish to compliment my former hometown on being chosen as a satellite for Sandhills Community College and for having an excellent continuing education art course taught by Mrs. Ollie Augustoni. Ollie is a very gifted artist and an inspiring teacher. A Raleigh friend and 1 travel to Raeford nearly every Tuesday to study "Painting On Fabric," taught by Mn. Augustoni. To decrease our travel time, we have searched for such a course among the colleges and universities in the triangle area, but we have not been able to find a program us ing the skillful techniques we have found with Sandhills Community College. I urge everyone interested in stu dying this type of art as a hobby to discuss the schedule with Mrs. Augustoni. I always enjoy going home to Raeford and this gives me one more reason to be very proud of Hoke County. My love to all, Gladys (Gladdie) Harrison Raleigh, North Carolina ? ? ? Maybe Sunday, September 16, 1964 won't mean as much to you as it will to many men in Hoke County. Just 44 years ago on Sun day, September 16, 1940, many of us left for service with the National Guard. Instead of being gone for a year, it turned out that we had to fight World War II. A letter came from Bill William son stating that the "Scotch Tigers," former member of a unit of the National Guard, will hold their annual reunion and banquet at Parkton on Sept. 13, 1984. The reunion will open at the American Legion Post home in Parkton at 5:30 p.m. with an old timey Bull Session. The banquet will start at 7: IS p.m. Thanks Bill, it was good to hear from you. ...Council makes improvements (Continued from page 1) In a move to make the equip ment the city already has last longer, the City Council approved a motion to re-roof an equipment storage shed. "Right now, the equipment had just as well be sitting out in the weather," Phillips said. Bids for the roofing job have already been taken, and the lowest was $9,700 and was offered by a local company, Lupo Construc tion. The council had put $8,000 into the budget for half of the roof, but approved the higher bid for the en tire job with the extra funding to come out of the fund balance. "This is about the last year we can save the whole roof," Phillips said. Phones purchased In a move that will save money for the city in the long run, the council approved the purchase of the currently leased phone system in City Hall. The system will cost the city $4,099 plus 4.5 <7o sales tax, accord ing to Phillips. After the system is paid for, there will be a saving of $330 per month* Phillips said. In an effort to generate some ex tra money, the City Council ap proved the selling of an old truck that was used for emptying dump sters. The city is no longer in the dumpster business and does not need the truck, Phillips said. According to the manager, the truck would cost about $33,000 to repair, and a new one would cost about $60,000. Phillips was instructed by coun cil to get as much as possible for the truck. In other action at the meeting, the City Council: ?Approved a new personnel policy. The old one was outdated, and the only new item contained in the policy is a grievance clause for employees, Phillips said. ?Authorized the City Manager to seek bids for the paving of some city streets. ?Re-appointed Crawford Thomas as Fire Chief. ?Received for information a plan for digging a trench at the landfill. The anticipated price of the pit will be about $6,600 of which 2S4b will be paid by the city and the rest billed to the county, the manager said. Phillips estimates the pit will be needed by October 1 . No action was taken. ?Voted to return S9.280.27 to Red Springs because the town still needs the money to repair city facilities after the tornados. The money was given to Raeford for services rendered in the aftermath of the storms.
