DAR honors student
Harry L. Souther land, Hoke
High senior, has been honored by
the Upper Cape Fear Chapter,
Daughters of the American
Revolution, through the society's
Good Citizen program.
The Good Citizen Committee,
inaugurated more than SO years
ago, recognizes senior high school
students in America who show
outstanding qualities of leader
ship, dependability, service, and
patriotism.

ings High School and Robert Jor
dan of Flora Macdonald
Academy.
Southerland's mother, Elvenia
Souther land, also was a guest at
the chapter meeting where the
three students were awarded pins
and certificates of award.
Southerland is president of the
senior class and of the Spanish
club. He is a tutor through HOST,
serves on the staff of the Annual,
and is on the National Honor Roll.
He has received the United
Harry L. Southeriand
States Achievement Award and is
listed in Who's Who Among
Secondary School Students.
In addition to his academic
achievements, Harry is highly
valued as an athlete. A four-year
player on the Hoke High football
and basketball teams, he also plays
baseball.
Upchurch High principal
taking management course
Allen Edwards, Upchurch
Junior High School, is among a
group of public school principals
from throughout the state who are
participating in a new
professional-level management
course for principals.
The Principals' Executive Pro
gram, which began in September,
is offered by the Institute of
Government at The University of
North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The program is designed to
teach the skills and provide the
knowledge that will help public
school principals in managing their
schools. The curriculum is organiz
ed around thirteen major phases of
school management, including
such areas as long-range planning,
crisis management, leadership,
personnel management, effective
communication, policy-making,
curriculum analysis, financial
management, and uses of com
puter technology.
The course is being taught in
Chapel Hill (luring seven three-day
sessions from September through
December.
Three other identical courses
will be provided during the next
twelve months.
The principals will attend 92 ses
sions during the twenty days and
fourteen evenings they spend in the
classroom. The program is the
longest in-service residence pro
gram for principals in the United
States.
