Hoke native top MD
By Kay Thomas
Dr. Jane T. Carswell has been
named Family Doctor of the Year
by the American Academy of
Family Physicians. She is the first
woman to receive the award in the
seven years of its existance.
Dr. Carswell was born in
Raeford, the daughter of the Rev.
and Mrs. Arthur D. Carswell. Her
father was a Presbyterian minister
in Hoke County from 1923 to
1939. He served Bethel and Shiloh
as the pastor and preached on Sun
day afternoons at Phillippi and
Dundarrach. Fifth Sundays, he
preached at the Sandy Grove
Presbyterian Church which is now
in Fort Bragg.
One newspaper headline last
week mentioned Carswell's sur
prise at the attention surrounding
her selection. No one in Hoke
County was at all surprised by her
honor. Citizens who knew the
Carswell family spoke lovingly of
how good and smart and fine the
family was when they were known
here.
Jane was one of seven children.
The others were Arthur D. Jr.
(Art), Mary Thomas, Madeline,
John, Judy, and Jill. Dr. Carswell
said last week that she began think
ing of becoming a doctor when she
was four years old. She mentioned
hearing her neighbor's stories of
being a medical missionary in
China. This neighbor would be
Miss Christana McLauchlin's
brother. The Carswell family lived
in the neighborhood of Miss
McLauchlin's house on Highland
Street, now occupied by her
nephew, Neil McFadyen Sr.
The Rev. Carswell moved his
family to Sanford in 1939. From
there they moved to Manchester,
then to Providence Forte, Va. Dr.
Carswell graduated Phi Beta Kap
pa from the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill. She then
attended the Medical College of
Virginia in Richmond.
After the closing of a hospital
where she practiced in Harlan
County, Ky., Dr. Carswell moved
to Lenoir and began working there
in 1961. She says the key to a suc
cessful family practice is communi
ty involvement-with a good dose
of humility. She believes that a
good family doctor cannot close
oneself off from the people of the
community after coffee hours. Pa
tients "are people you go to church,
with, people you see in the grocery
store. You have to be part of the
community."
She is credited with leadership in
a number of caring organizations
in Lenoir. She helped create the
Caldwell County home for Bat
tered Woman. She has given
leadership to the Caldwell County
Group Home for troubled youths
and the Caldwell Hospice for the
terminally ill. She serves on the ci
ty's Human Relations Committee
and participated in a project that
made housing available for low
income city residents.
When Bethel Presbyterian
Church celebrated its two
hundredth year, the Carswell fami
ly, including Jane, came for the
festivities. Some Hoke County
people have remained in touch
with the Carswells. If News
Journal readers would like to con
gratulate Dr. Carswell, her address
is Medical Clinic, Mulberry Street,
Lenoir, N.C., 28645.
