Sports faoke girls advance The Hoke High Lady Bucks earned a berth in the East Regional playoffs by blasting Rocky Mount 73-39 during first round action Tuesday night. ^ The Buck attack was led by Del 9ridgen, who scored 26 points in helping the home team record to 24-2. Sheila Southerland and Toni Rheames each scored 12 points in the winning cause. On Friday night, burning dryers, policemen running across the floor and a late game start did not help the Lady Bucks in their effort to tiake the Southeastern Conference ?>urnament Championship away from Reid Ross High last Friday night. The Hoke girls were already the regular season winners, but Ross won the conference tournament by a score of 68-38. The late start of the game really did more to hurt the girls than anything else, according to coach Audrey Long. ? "We were pumped up and ready to play at 7 o'clock, but at 23 minutes until 8, we weren't," said Long. "We just couldn't hit either," she said, adding that Ross's Monika Krause, the 6 foot, one inch blond, was hitting everything she threw up.. Krause scored 31 points in the game. m It was "do or die" for the girls Tuesday night as they went against Rocky Mount. Coming into the game with an 11 and 12 record, Rocky Mount, Big East Conference champs, never appeared to be as strong as Hoke. The girls from Hoke now have a 24 and 2 record. "They don't have the record we do, but in tournament play, you throw the records out the door," said Long. Because of the win Tuesday, the , girls and seven other teams, will advance to the regional play-offs in Wilson. The four winners in those games will go to Greensboro for the State Championship, said Long. Linda Melvin scored 17 points for the girls in last Friday night's game. Sheila Southerland scored 13 and Del Pridgen added 10. The Ross girls, who were state champions last year, lost their bid ' for a second crown Tuesday to Cary 61-55. In boys' action, the Bucks are now out of it. They lost in a squeaker to Lumberton last Thursday night in the first round of the conference tournament. The final score was Lumberton 52, Hoke High 51. Marco Pickett lead the assault scoring 17 points for the Bucks. Tony McRae followed closely with 11 while Ronnie Melvin hit for 10, Marvin Maynor scored 9 and Harry Southerland scored 4. Up and in Although this shot went in for two points, the Hoke High School girls lost in the Southeastern Conference Tourney titles to Reid Ross by 10 points, 68-58. Despite the Friday night defeat, the girls are still the regular con ference champions. The girls were 23-2 after Friday's action. Both losses were to Ross. The Hoke girls have beat last year's state champs once.
