The Hoke High students entered electrical projects in the contest. SUent readers These students in Ginger Johnson 's 5th grade class at J. W. Turlington School, started a Sustained Silent Reading Program this year. In the Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) Program, each student and the teacher as a role model, read silently every day for 15 to 18 minutes. The teacher and the students agree upon rules for SSR. Everyone selects a book, magazine, or newspaper, a timer is used, and a " DO NOT DISTURB " sign Is placed on the classroom door. Research has pro ven that a well developed and Implemented program of SSR not only Increases scores on reading tests, but children discover what reading is all about, and find magic within reading. I < * A u?> McBryde attends Wingate this fall Kimberly Parker McBryde, a senior at Flora Macdonald Academy in Red Springs, has been accepted to begin studies at Wingate College this fall. Kimberly resides with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. David McBryde on Route 1 in Raeford. Since entering F.M.A. she has been active in extra-curricular ac tivities including being a member of the soccer, basketball and soft ball teams. Kim will be graduated from F.M.A. on June 4 at ceremonies to be held in the academy auditorium. . Spelling winner Melody Walker, a sixth-grade student at J. W. Turlington, Is this year's local Spelling Bee winner. She is in Mrs. Brenda Smith's homeroom class. She Is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Walker. She will represent Hoke County In the regional Spelling Bee in Charlotte on April 12. Straight and tall Hoke High School's unit of the Junior ROTC was given its Biennial Formal Inspection last Thursday. The inspection was conducted by Lieutenant Col onel Huston Smith, Chief of the ROTC Division at Fort Bragg. According to Hoke Htgh's Senior ROTC Instructor Major Carlton L. McGuirt, the results of the Inspection will not be released until the latter part of May. Enlistment option offered Sgt. Gary Wieland, recruiter in Raeford for the North Carolina Army National Guard, has an nounced that a "split training op tion" is being offered to high school juniors, seniors and college students. The option will enable a student to attend Army Basic Training during his summer vacation and return home in time for the follow ing term in September. He will then participate in the one weekend a month meeting, getting paid about $79.00 for the two days at his home armory, while atten ding school. On his next summer vacation, he will be sent to an active Army post for his individual training or schooling, and then return home again in time for the following school term. He will then finish out his enlistment at the local ar mory. The split training option will enable many more students to take advantage of the many benefits of the National Guard, such as pay $35,000 life insurance, PX privileges, free space-available air travel, leadership and technical training, and retirement benefits. Further information on this pro gram or on the National Guard in general may be obtained by calling the Raeford Armory at 875-3576. Forty percent of adults had high school diplomas in 1960.
