Howard's office has a $50,000 budget on tap for the coming fiscal year. In addition, the new recruiter was given approval to write specifications and take bids for a new car to be used for the duties of the office. Life given for murder (Continued from page 1A) According to Michael, "pop" is a nickname for his younger brother. Woods himself then wrote this part of the note: "Mom, 1 love you too. I couldn't help it." According to Michael, Woods tried to make Isabell sign the note. She would not, he said. Soon afterward, Michael left the house and went to the Hoke Coun ty Sheriffs Department. Before the boy could get out of the yard, Woods called him back momentarily and told him to kiss his mother good-bye, Michael testified. According to testimony from Detective C.E. Harris, of the Hoke County Sheriff's Department, by the time deputies arrived at the home, about 45 minutes after Michael left, Isabell Woods was dead. Her body was found on the den floor, half naked, Harris said. Harris also found the gun that Woods had carried around all day on & bed in one of the bedrooms, he said. The gun was cocked and had been reloaded, Harris said. The bedroom window was open and Woods was gone, Harris said. Woods was spotted by deputies across a field next to the house, said Harris. The man came running to deputies and asked if they had been in the house yet. According to Harris, Woods said: "She's hurt, she's hurt bad." Woods was then arrested and taken to the Sheriff's Department, said Harris. According to the deputy, Woods made a short statement but refused to restate what he had said for the record. Woods said: "Yes, I did it. We were starting to make love and she grabbed for the gun and 1 grabbed for it at the same time and it went off," according to Harris. Harris and Hoke Detective Jim my Riley both said Woods was not drunk when he was arrested. Isabell's body was shipped to Chapel Hill for an autopsy on September 4, said Harris and two members of the medical examiners office. According to Dr. Michael Shkrum, Assistant Chief Medical Examiner, Isabell did not die in stantly. She had been shot in the shoulder, he said. The bullet broke her collar bone, pierced a lung and nicked a major blood vessel, said Shkrum. The woman bled to death, he testified. Skyofty r<y SPRING VALUES I STORE HOURS 9 A.M. - 9 P.M.
