Residence hit for $1,400 B&E -w ? * ? - s -? * Thieves netted over $1,400 in personal property belonging to Henry D. Carpenter during a break-in last Tuesday, according to reports from the Hoke County Sheriff's Department. In a report to deputies. Carpenter said he had gone to visit a friend about a mile away from his mobile home. The man was only gone about two hours, he told deputies. Carpenter returned to his home to find the front door standing open, the drawers and cabinets in his living room and kitchen stan ding open, and a microwave oven, a video tape recorder and a por table radio missing. According to reports, there was no sign of forced entry into the trailer. Also last Tuesday, Bradley Ger main reported to sheriffs deputies that a home he was building was broken into sometime between last September and the present. Bradley had been out of the state, he told deputies. According to reports, Bradley had some tools apparently stolen from inside the building even though the hinges on one of the doors had been recently replaced. One of the new hinges was bent, but a forced entry into the building was not apparent, reports say. In an unrelated incident, as of Monday morning, no charges had been brought against a man who assaulted a student on a Hoke County school bus and threatened the life of a school official, said Sheriff Dave Barrington. According to reports, the man tot on a bus when it made a routine stop and threatened to kill an assistant principal in the coun ty. The man then started slapping a girl sitting on the front seat of the bus, according to a statement given by the bus driver. Charges have also not been brought against a man who allegedly robbed the home of Lester Baker on April 4, reports say. Baker left his home to go to church and upon his return found his home open and a window broken. Sheriff's deputies determined that the door had been opened with a key and the window knock ed out from the inside, according to the report. Taken from the house was a .38 calibre pistol and $144 in cash, reports say. Sheriffs deputies A.R. Odom and Ronnie Lowry questioned a man who had been living at the house with Baker, according to the report. After the questioning, the ap parently stolen items were recovered, says the report. Baker would not press charges against the man, reports say. Raul M. Chauey reported $404 in tools taken from his tool shed. According to reports, the ap parent theft happened on April 6. Last Tuesday, Brady Locklear reported a 1985 red Kawasaki three-wheeler taken from beside his house. According to reports, the motor cycle was valued at $945. Raeford Police Chief Leonard Wiggins reported two shoplifters arrested last week at Raeford's AAP food store. On April 9, Gienda Sue Oxen dine, 17, of Rt. 1, Shannon, was cited for taking two bottles of soft drink and a beg of candy, Wiggins said. The value of the merchandise was valued at $2.89. the chief said. A 40-year-old Raeford woman, Brenda Lockkar Usher, was also arrested at the same store after be ing caught trying to leave the store with some men's cologne, some ladies' booties and 12 cartons of chewing gum, Wiggins said. The merchandise had a value of S3S.10, said Wiggins. On three different occasions last week. Convenient Food Mart reported their video machines broken into during operating hours, said Wiggins. The first incident was reported last Thursday when $100 in quarters were taken from a machine. Again last Saturday, $50 in change was reported missing from a broken machine. The third occasion was reported last Sunday when machines were found broken into. There was an unknown amount of money taken in the last break-in, said Wiggins. According to the chief, children are suspected of breaking into the Universal Sports Center last Fri day. An air conditioning unit was removed from the wall for ap parent thieves to enter the building, said Wiggins. . . . Motel delayed by Moore project (Continued from page 1A) has agreed to pay for half the costs of running the water and sewer lines. A restaurant is included in the plans for the facility, said Ballard. "Our feasibility studies show that it would be impractical to build a motel without a restaurant," Ballard told coun cilmen. The motel will not be affiliated with any chain, said Ballard. It will be built in a colonial style with small windows, in contrast to those in most motels, he said, add ing that energy conservation is the main reason. The motel will include a con ference room, he said. "We could have cut costs and left out the meeting room, but we plan to run a service oriented motel, so we went ahead and plan ned for it," said Ballard. In discussions with the city council, Ballard had said that he would begin construction the next week. Monday, Ballard said: "I did not want to move quite as rapidly as (the other partners in the pro ject) wanted to move. I am a very cautious, conservative person." First Hoke seeking FSLIC Incorporators of a proposed Hoke County savings and loan association have altered its plans and will seek federal government backed insurance for all deposits, the firm's chief executive officer said Tuesday. First Hoke Savings and Loan Association had planned to use a private insurance company. However, because of recent troubles incurred by Ohio institu tions, the local firm now plans to cover deposits with insurance issued by Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation (FSLIC), President Frank Teal said. The move to FSLIC is expected to help with stock sales for the pro posed Raeford firm and to renew the confidence of future depositors. "Lately we have been getting the feeling that people in Hoke County would prefer that we were federal ly insured," Teal said. Capital requirements for federal insurance is about the same as for privately insured institutions. Teal said. First Hoke hopes to raise over $2 million before opening its doors, but would be required to raise at least SI .3 million. Thus far all stock sales have been held locally, and Teal says in corporators hope the switch to federal insurance will stimulate new purchases of stock from Hoke County buyers. The initial offer of the stock is at Sll per share. About 15V? of the needed capital has been raised with less than a month of sales. Teal said. First Hoke is scheduled to ap pear before the state Savings and Loan Commission in Raleigh on June 6 to seek a state charter for the new county institution. Once open. First Hoke plans to offer services like free checking and Saturday banking, Teal said. ( "We're going to attempt to stimulate building in Hoke County by offering more loans, 'Teal said, noting that institutions now in business m the county have been sluggish in the construction and mortgage market. The proposed First Hoke will occupy the offices of the old Bank of Raeford on the corner of Main Street and Elwood Avenue in ( Raeford. The office is currently open for stock sales and is maintaining regular office hours. Saving a You Can See... Quality You Can Truatt PRICES GOOD FRIDAY.
