crafts and games for the children.

I went down to the depot last
week to see how the renovation
was progressing. You don't have
to go inside to see that work is be
ing done, just glance at the work
done on the brick walls outside.
Now a good time for everyone to
inspect this work is Saturday,
April 27 at 8 a.m. This will be
Community Work Day at the
depot and there should be a job for
everyone. Bring your hammer and
saw and join in the work of this
project,. It is something that in
years to oome that you can tdl
your children or grandchildren
that the people of Raeford and
Hoke County accomplished by
community effort; not tax dollars,
but by the "sweat of the brow."
Even if you can't drive a nail or
saw a board, come by and give
your moral support.
? ? ?
Every day in the newspaper and
on TV, you can read and hear
about the upcoming election in
1986. The battle lines are being
drawn and the generals are muster
ing their troops for the battle, I
don't know if they will tire out
before the primary, but when one
side starts, the other comes for
ward.
Recently I received a call asking
me if I would attend a dinner for a
candidate to hear a U.S. State
Senator speak. The complete
details had not been made, so I
suspect that they are feeling the
water to see if things are hot or
cold. The only thing about a fund
raiser so far ahead of the primary
or election, is that you could be
asked twice for a donation. It has
happened before.
So don't be surprised if your
phone rings once or twice a week
now asking for political contribu
tions. v
? ? . ?
If Hoke County is going to
operate a garbage system, does this
mean that they will take over the
pickup in Raeford? You know we
folks pay county taxes too.
? ? ?
It was good to read that the
Hoke County commissioners are
looking into the possibility of
renovating and keeping the present
courthouse. We think this is a wise
decision.

Taking off paint
When the Aberdeen and Rockflsh Railroad Depot
was painted a few years ago, the thought of restoring
the building to its original state had not been conceiv
ed. Since then, such a project had been undertaken
and the paint had to be taken off. Shown here are
Bob Cox (spraying) and Nick Vinien putting a water
based paint remover on the building. The spray is
said to be better for buildings than sandblasting
because it leaves the original glaze on the brick.
Community depot day scheduled
A "Depot Raising" is scheduled
for Saturday to help restore the old
Aberdeen and Rockfish Railroad
terminal for the offices of the
Chamber of Commerce and the
Economic Developer.
The event will be a community
work day, and all who would like
to help are invited, Chamber of
Commerce Executive Secretary
Beverly Pasternak said.
Interior walls are on the
schedule to be raised and exterior
trim repaired during the work day.
Community involvement is
needed in order to remodel the olri
train station for the projected
budget of S30.000.
Last week the paint was re
moved from the bricks on the out
side of the building using water
soluble chemicals.
The process is preferred by
historic restoration groups over
sandblasting.
Sandblasting apparently distroys
the glaze on bricks and allows
moisture to be trapped inside.
Moisture will freeze, and in
time, sandblasted bricks will crum
ble, preservationists say.
This week, concrete floors were
donated and poured by Hoke Con
crete Works. The refinishing was
donated by Lander Peterkin.
The depot restoration fund had
topped $12,000 this week with re
cent contributions being made by
Tar Heel Hatchery and Burlington
Industries.
A donation was also made by
the Hoke High Class of 1965 in
memory of five class members who
have died.
The class donation was made in
memory of Mary Ruth Williams,
Kenneth Floyd, Robert Pittman,
Jerry West and Kay Lindscy.
