Special certificates of recognition were also given to Scuriock School and J.W. Turlington. District awards were presented to J. W. McLauchlln School and West Hoke School. State award went to South Hoke School, by virtue of having the most points, 1211, will hold the County's Dental Challenge Pla que for the third straight year. Only 63 N.C. schools achieved District Awards (1000+ points) and only 24 N.C. schools earned the State Award ( 1200 + points). The dramatic accomplishments of Hoke County Schools are the direct results of the outstanding efforts by teachers, aides and school leaders. Illegal use of credit creating consumer wooes ( Editor's note: This week has been declared National Consumer Week by President Ronald Reagan. Hoke County 4-H'er Leah Hendrix has written this arti cle to help local consumers be more aware of the snags of the market place. By Leak Hcaditx Counterfeiters, forgers and thieves are making a profit by the unauthorized use of credit card numbers. They sometimes get card receipts or carbons from store trash. Extra imprints are made on blank forms by dishonest clerks. Dishonest telephone callers pose as bank representatives or telepbone canvassers in order to get a charge card number. Then these illegally obtained numbers are used to order mer chandise by phone to be delivered to a "new address." The Consumer Credit Protec tion Act states that you do not owe anything for unauthorized pur chases if you report the loss im mediately before the card has been used. If charges have already been made, your liability is limited to $50 per card. Most companies have a toll free number for reporting missing cards. There are ways you as a con sumer can reduce the risk of credit and charge card fraud. It is a good idea to leave seldom used cards at home in a safe place and to carry cards separately from your wallet. When making a purchase keep your card in view after giving it to a clerk. Ask for and destroy the carbon and any voided charge slips. Do not lend you card to anyooe and do not give your card number over the phone unless you know the company is reliable. When you receive new cards sign them immediately. Keep a record of the account numbers, expiration dates, phone numbers, and ad dresses for each card company. Save receipts and reconcile them with your billing statement. Modern computerized billing systems make careful use of charge cards and record keeping more im portant. Consumers should realize that prevention of card loss or unauthorized use is easier than the hassle of trying to correct errors or get a new card number after a loss.
