Flora Macdonald honors students , Last week Flora Macdonald Apademy completed its fifth six w$ck grading period and released ritmes of the following students in jpades 4 through 12 whose cumulative averages placed them on one of the academy's honor "tolls. The Headmaster's Honor Roll inquires a minimum average of 95 arid students on F.M.A. Honor polled maintained averages of 90 to* 94 for othe grading period. 7 The Special Honor Roll is com posed of students who raised their 8' yerage at least five points over the {-eceeding grading period. /.These area students were fjonored HEADMASTER'S HONOR ROLL Fourth Grade Heather Britt - Raeford and Kevin O'Briant - Shannon. Donna Kennedy is chosen Hoke Math teacher of year ; Mrs. Donna Kennedy has been Chosen as the Hoke County Math Teacher of the year by Dr. Robert Nelson, Superintendent. " Mrs. Kennedy attended Hoke County Schools, Pembroke State University and is presently work ing toward her Masters of Math Education at Pembroke. She is a iftember of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the North Carolina Council of the Teachers of Mathematics. She has been a Math teacher at Upchurch Junior High School for ten years and has been Math Department Chairman for seven years. ? While Mrs. Kennedy has been chairman of the Math Department the mastery learning concept has been implemented which has resulted in fewer failures and higher California Achievement Test scores. In-service training for math teachers has been planned by, and personnel to conduct these workshops have been attained by Mrs. Kennedy. She has spent the past two sum mers organizing the scope, se quence and testing of the math program for Upchurch. " She makes every effort to see that other math teachers have the materials they need and that they fully understand the math pro gram. Two years ago Mrs. Kennedy worked to write a remedial pro gram and helped to obtain com puters for the math labs. For two years Mrs. Kennedy has coached the Mathcounts team from Upchurch. This is a team of four students and one alternate chosen from students who study math through 12th grade level on nonclass time and compete for the spots on the team. These students compete against other teams in the district. The first year the team made a good showing and this year the team placed third in the district out of 39 teams and went to the state finals where again they did well. Mrs. Kennedy works long and hard to promote math excellence at Upchurch through the program, math team, math week, math fair, inservice training and reminding all that "math shapes our world." Mrs. Kennedy is married to James (Jimmy) R. Kennedy Jr. and has two children, Kristy and Brandon. The seven district winners in math and in science will each receive a $500 award and the State math and science winners will receive a SI, 500 award. Eighth Grade Clifton Watson - Red Springs. Raphael Allen Allen Finishes basic training Navy Airman Apprentice Raphael Allen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Allen, recently finish ed basic training in Orlando, Florida. Allen is now attending the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Memphis, Tennessee for approx imately 12 weeks to become an Aviation Machinist Mate. During the 12 week course, Allen will be provided the basic knowledge of how to operate Military Aircraft adn procedures on the handling, storage, assembly and how to maintain the aircraft capabilities. He will also be instructed on how to perform the duties of a flight engineer. Allen graduated from Hoke High in 1984. Miss Elliott is presently serving as President of Alpha Xi Delta, Financial Vice-President of the Methodist College Jaycees, Secretary of the Leadership Association and Historian of the North Carolina Student Legislature.
