Bethea's supervisor, Mrs. Cohilda Lyons looks on. Hokes top bus driver honored A reception was given in honor of Dennis Bethea, a South Hoke Elementary School bus driver. He was awarded the "Tracy Lea Calhoun Memorial" plaque at the Hoke County Board of Education office on May 7, 1985, by Superintendent, Dr. Robert Nelson. The award is given in recogni tion of outstanding achievement in school bus safety. Each year, the North Carolina Petroleum Marketers Association gives each county an opportunity to select one of its drivers who exhibits outstanding qualities in caring for the students who ride on their bus. Dennis has driven a school bus for over ten years, averaging Fair winners These South Hoke School students were winners in the recent Social Studies Fair held at the school. South Hoke students honored for projects April was Social Studies Month for Hoke County Schools. All of the teachers and students at South Hoke School were busy making projects for the Social Studies Fair. There were three first-place win ners in each grade level. Each win ner was presented a blue ribbon and a certificate by Hank Richards, the school principal. Kindergarten winners and (teachers) were: Bobbv Blue (Virginia Smith), Alicia Dial (Pan dy Autry), Ronnie Lowery (Beatrice Freeman). First grade winners and (teachers) were: Bennie Oxendine (Pandy Autry), Melody Cole (Bar bara Walters), Chasity Jacobs (Pandy Autry). Second grade winners and (teachers) were: Byron Jones (Beckie Sutton), Shannon Dickens (Sennie McPhatter), Charles Wall (Beckie Sutton). Third grade winners and (teachers) were: Jannie Cummings (Bobbie Doby), Tanya Hall (Elsie Cameron), Delton Woods (Elsie Coleman). Fourth grade winners and (teachers) were: Amy Black (Darlene Clark), Charity Sander son (Darlene Clark), Steven Jacobs (Jerry Oxendine). These winners' projects were displayed in the Hoke County Public Library during the last week in April to be judged for the coun ty prizes. Judges for the South Hoke con test were Myrtis Spencer, Elsie Coleman, Beckie Sutton, Pandy Autry and Beatrice Freeman. The CEP Social Studies Com mittee Representative at South Hoke School was Barbara Walters. PAGE meeting held On April 23 at 7 p.m., the organizational meeting of PAGE (Parents Association for Gifted Education) was held in the Hoke County High School Library. The guest speaker was Dr. Donald Russell, State Coordinator of PAGE. Over 100 parents and guests at tended. Following the meeting, refreshments were served. Officers for the 1985-86 school term will be elected at the next meeting which is tentatively scheduled for May 21. All interested persons are invited to attend. seventy-six miles per day, transporting an average of sixty two students daily. He was selected by his school principal, Hank Richards, and his supervisor, Mrs. C.M. Lyons, because of his at titude, disposition, concern, care and loyalty to his school, county, parents and citizens of North Carolina. May 1 celebrated Children at the Raeford Kindergarten and Day Nursery celebrated May 1 with song and games culminating in the crowning of the May Queen, Lindsay Ed wards. Through a game of Blind Man's Bluff, the queen and crown bearer, Brian Tew, were selected. Jarmen Savage was the "blind man." Dana Holt presented the queen with a beautiful pink rose. All of the children danced around the May Pole and then en joyed chocolate ice cream cones. The five year old children com prising the kindergarten class travelled to Asheboro where they toured the new African Pavilian at the North Carolina Zoo. They celebrated May First with a picnic before returning to the Kindergarten. NC workshop attended by local group The migrant education state parent advisory council workshop was held on Tuesday, April 23, at the Sheraton Hotel in Greenville. Brenda Edwards, a Scurlock school Chapter I reading teacher, was a presenter at the workshop. She gave three one-hour presenta tions on the topic of "How To Reinforce Migrant Students Learn ing At Home - Through Mini Books." Mr. and Mrs. Billy Johnson and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Ware, who are all parents of children at Scurlock School, attended the workshop along with Edna Brat cher, the migrant recruiter for Hoke County.
