Turkey crafts show promises something for everyone Everyone in town is operating in high gear for the Turkey Festival beginning Wednesday and the arts and crafts folk are no exception. Jeannie Smith, Arts Chainman for the Festival, is> very pleased Withi the number, and quality, of craftsmen > gathered for the Festival. ; i "We have a variety of people, both from Hoke County and out side the county, participating and I think it will offer a good selection of crafts for everyone," reports Smith. Smith, a talented and artistic person herself, has been collecting applications and contacting area artists for months now. Saturday, she, along with t</eryone else, will be .able to skc the fruits of he* labor. f t * Smith's husband, Fred, a well known area wood worker, will be exhibitihg and selling his wares. Ready for exhibit on Saturday will be a huntboard, twin pencil post beds, and a lovely corner cabinet, among other items. Also on Saturday, Cordelia Pur die will have her cross-stitch ready to go and mom's and Barbara Rozier will Have selected the best of their colintry crafts to sell. Delton Hardin and his wife, Juanita, are another Hoke County couple who jointly create country crafts. They will have available, shelves and hand pairitrrl items, all created to finish up that country corner you've been planning for the den. Woodworking seems to be a popular past time in Hoke County and Reverend Charles Ansley, pastor of the Antioch Presbyterian Church, is right in there with the best of them. "1 enjoy woodworking. It's relaxing. It seems a shame to waste good wood so I look for odd pieces in order to net a different wain in my work," explains Ansley. He will have plenty of tables to sell, probably priced just right, since he says he has no more room in his house for them all. He proudly reports that all his work is created from Hoke County wood. He has items from walnut, oak and cedar, so be sure to stop by his booth on Saturday and see what Reverend Ansley has done with these lovely woods. Also exhibiting wooden crafts will be Tim McKenzie, Bennie Turbeville and Bruce and Carol Holland. Newcomers to our community, Hazel and John Dillman, will have crocheted dolls and jewelry for sale. Mrs. Dillman has a selection of dolls, including Popeye, Olive Oyl and Sweet Pea, all of which would make Christmas selections easy. Ed Byrd, a familiar artist in our community will be present with about thirty needlepoint clocks, all boasting emblems for State, Carolina, ECU, Duke and others. He also has some of the profes sional .teams, so everyone will have a choice. Someone new to art exhibition is local resident, Cathy Jacobs. Jacobs has a variety of items to of fer, including unusual pretzel wreaths, "bagel mice," country window wreaths and country baskets. She also will have on, hand something she is excited about because it is so unusual. "I've been told that it has an In dian look, because of the beads and burnt wood look," she says. "I have no idea how well it will go over. It's basically just an experi ment." The Turkey Festival will be an outstanding event for Raeford and Hoke County. The artists and craftspeople who will be there representing our county will cer tainly offer one of our county's best facets.
