State University This is a good year to give a book on gardening to the green thumb on your Christmas list. 1985 saw the publication of several new books and the reprints of some old ones. There is also a nice selection of recently printed books available at \ bookstores. Below are some suggestions: A Southern Garden by Elizabeth Lawrence was originally published in 1942. This treasure has been reprinted in paperback by the University of North Carolina Press, P.O. Box 2288, Chapel Hill. N.C. 27514. Lawrence's observations make you a better observer and a better I gardener. Included in the book are charts which record the earliest dates for the first bloom, the latest date for the first bloom and the k length of blooming season for more than 800 species of plants. Southern Gardens. Southern Gardening by William Lanier Hunt, and printed by the Duke University Press, is another ex cellent choice. Along with Elizabeth Lawrence, Hunt is one of North Carolina's foremost horticultural authorities. The books of Hunt and Lawrence show not only their great knowledge of gardening but their love of it as well. That love shines through and makes both books a pleasure to read. Growing and Propagating Wild Flowers by Harry R. Phillips, curator of native plants at the North Carolina Botanical Garden in Chapel Hill, features practical, easy-to-follow methods for raising native plants from seeds, cuttings and divisions while offering specific instructions on the pro pagation and cultivation of plants representing nearly 100 genera of wildflowers, carnivorous plants and ferns. Just published this year. Crowing and Propagating Wild Flowers should be readily available at bookstores throughout the state, or it may be ordered directly from the N.C. Botanical Garden, UNC CH, Totten Center 457-A, Chapel Hill. N.C. 27514. It is available in cloth and hardcover. Perennials by Pamela Harper and Fred McGourty is a 1983 publication of HP Books of Tuscon, Arizona. Both Harper and McGourty are noted garden ing authorities. Harper was a featured speaker at Raleigh's Mordecai Garden Symposium in 1985. This paperback book contains excellent photographs as well as suggestions on planting and enjoy ing perennials, "the plants of the 80." The New Western Garden Book from the editors of Sunset magazine and Sunset books might be a good choice for serious gardeners. What would a North Carolina gardener want with a book about gardening in the West? It docs not apply only to the West. The amount of plants listed and in cluded with drawings make it an excellent reference book. It is filled with ideas as well as information. It is available in bookstores across the state. The Essential Earthman by Henry Mitchell, garden columnist for The Washington Post, contains humor, philosophy and careful personal gardening observation. Published by the University of In diana Press, Bloomington, In diana, this is an excellent choice for pleasure reading. Other books to consider are any from the Ortho Books series or the Sunset series. These series are known for their good information and ideas. Another option is giving the reliable gift certificate and let ting the gardener make the choice. The Best of Wishes for the Holiday Season and for always. May the Holl day Season find you feeling joyful for this Is the most joyful of all seasons... May you also find Peace In the meaning of Christmas. . STAFF Freddie W. Williams Helen Monroe Mar&aret L.
