Allen receives IBM assignment The International Business Machines Corporations in Kingston, New York has offered Genise Merchel Allen of Raeford, a temporary job assignment in their Cooperative Education Pro gram with Lab Operations and Development. This job assignment is to begin January 6, and is to end May 2, 1986. Genise, the daughter of Mr and Mrs. Bobby G. Allen of Raeford, is the first Psychology major in the Cooperative Education Program, at Fayetteville State University to be chosen by IBM. Yule merry for students Upchurch Junior High has spon sored two activities recently designed to help the community. Upchurch students, at Thanksgiving helped provide less fortunate community members with food. Six families were chosen by in dividual school communities. Students brought non-perishable items for distribution. During Christmas week ac tivities December 16-20, Upchurch students established a "Wishing Well." By dropping change in the well, students sought to create a happier Christmas for community children. The money was used for toys for those children selected by social services. Saturday M0 tM 12:09 Noon Wmz " , Shortcuts make cleaning easier Here are some ways you can shortcut - or prevent - many com mon cleaning chores. ?Wipe up food spills on your range or cooktop as they happen, before they ha\e a chance to bake on. -Don't let gas flames lick the sides of your cook ware; they cause heat stains. Use a spatter guard (or an in verted colander over the skillet) when you fry anything with pop ping grease, such as bacon or chicken. -Avoid cooking alkaline foods such as spinach or potatoes in aluminum cookware. It will darken the aluminum, making scouring necessary. -If you need to boil eggs in an aluminum pan. add a little vinegar to the water to keep the aluminum from darkening. -To remove burned or scorched food from the bottom of an aluminum pan. fill the pan with water and bring it to boiling. Then remove the softened food with a wooden spoon or pot scraper. --To brighten aluminum cookware, use it to cook acidic foods, such as apples or rhubarb. -To loosen food from enamel On the Front Burne Alice Pettitt Home Economics Agent cookware, fill the utensil with cold water and let stand until the food is softened. ?For food burned onto enamel eookware, fill the pot or pan with a water and baking soda solution (2 teaspoons soda per quart of water) and bring to boiling. The food will loosen enough to be removed with a scraper or plastic sponge. -Remove stains or cloudiness from glassware by filling glasses with water to which a teaspoon or two of ammonia has been added. Let stand for several hours or over night, then rinse thoroughly. -To whiten a porcelain sink, fill with lukewarm water, add a little chlorine bleach, and let stand for a short time. ?Rinse egg dishes with cold water. Extremely hot water will cook the eggs to the surface, mak ing them difficult to remove. -For burned spots on glass ceramic cookware, fill utensils with a water and baking soda solu tion and let it stand. The almond toffee recipe that was printed in the special Christmas edition last week was not clear. 1 am running the recipe again and hope it will be clearer. Almond Toffee Candy Vi cup butter 1 Vi teaspoon light corn syrup < cup almonds, blanched Vj cups sugar 2 tablespoons water 9 ozs. milk chocolate Combine the butter, sugar, corn svrup, and water in a 1 quart saucepan. Stir while melting the butter and heating the mixture. After the sugar is dissolved, stir fairly frequently to keep the mix ture from burning. Boil the candy to a final temperature of 300?F., being careful not to burn any por tion of it. Stir in half of the chop ped blanched almonds and pour onto a jelly roll pan. Spread the candy into a layer about V\ inch thick. Over hot water, melt half of the milk chocolate and spread over the surface of the candy.
