the NEWS-JOURNAL Raeford, N.C. April 28, 1988 Deaths & Funerals Mrs. Mamie G. Council Mamie G. Council, 80, died last Wednesday at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. The funeral was held Sunday at Center Grove Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. T.M. McDonald. Burial was in the church cemetery. Surviving are three daughters, Elizabeth Gaynair and Aretha Mc- Dougald, both of New York, and Berlene McPhaul of Raeford; two sons, Douglas Craddock of Baltimore and Albert Craddock of New York; two sisters, Helen Ruffins and Bertha Hoooper, both of Baltimore; three brothers, Harvy and John Parker, both of Red Springs, and Alton Parker of Augusta, Ga.; four step daughters; two stepsons; 20 grand children; and 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Amos Robinson Amos Robinson, 26, of New York, formerly of Raeford, died last Tuesday. The funeral was conducted at Mt. Carmel Holiness Church by the Rev. Jackie Robinson. Burial was in Mountain Grove Cemetery. Willie R. Shaw Willie Robert Shaw, 56, of McBryde Lake Road died Friday. The funeral was held Tuesday at Silver Grove Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. W.K. Mitchell. Burial was in the church cemetery. Surviving arc his wife, Willie P. Shaw; three daughters, Dorothy Pur cell, Stephanie Shaw and Marion Shaw all of Raeford; his stepmother, Mrs. Sylvester Shaw of Lumber Bridge; three brothers, Ervin Lee Melvin of Detroit, Willie Ashley of Raeford, and Leony Ashley of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a sister, Beatrice Handon of Lumber Bridge; and six grandchildren. Herbert L. Long Herbert Lee Long, 78, died Sun day at Highsmith-Rainey Memorial Hospital in Fayetteville. The son of the late Alfred L. and Etta An drews Long, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps, was a Woodman, and was an active member of Rockfish Tabernacle Baptist Church. He was retired from Burlington Industries. The funeral was held Tuesday at the church by the Revs. Robert Clegg, Russell Padgett and Michael Osment. Burial was in Raeford Cemetery. Enuy to the home was gained through the basement door. Taken were three rifles, a shotgun, a pistol, ammunition for the weapons, several pieces of jewelry and other items including a stereo and a VCR. The same day, two cars parked in an outside storage shed of the Cam den Road residence of William Paul Davis were broken into and $350 worth of items were taken from .a 1985 Buick and a toolbox and tools valued at $600 were taken from a 1987 Blazer. Some other property taken at the same time has been re covered. Last Saturday night a tan quarter horse valued at $1,200 was stolen from John E. Morrison of Rt. 5, Raeford. The theft was discovered about 7.15 Sunday morning when Morrison went to feed the horse. Restaurant equipment, including a deep-fat fryer, was stolen during a break-in Sunday at Virgil's Drive In on Highway 401. Entry to the restaurant was made through the drive-in window. Also taken was a quantity of food and other items. No estimate of the value of the items was available. The case is under in vestigation. A house on E. Prospect Avenue was broken into last Thursday evening according to a Raeford Police Department report. Taken from the residence of Kathy Branch of 501 E. Prospect was a VCR, a microwave oven and a TV. A break-in at Radio Shack on April 22 was reported to Raeford po lice last week. Taken was a speaker enclosure valued at $138. A Fayetteville woman who works at the House of Raeford discovered $575 in cash and a pistol missing from her car after she had loaned the car to a friend on the morning of April 19. Ernestine Bethea, 2210 Shaw Road Ext., Fayetteville, re ported the incident to Raeford police who are investigating. A car parked at Hoke High School was entered on April 18 and a stereo. $2 in cash and a pair of sunglasses were taken. The incident was repotted by Trade Lyn Guin of Rt. 4, Laur- inburg. Raeford police arrested 29 year-old Michael A. Priest of Dakota Drive in Harmony Heights Mobile Home Park and charged him with shoplift ing from Sky City on April 19. In another incident at Sky City on April 21, a 14 year old male was turned over to juvenile authorities for allegedly concealing an ink pen worth less than $1. Shoplifting is a continuing matter of concern to Raeford Police authori ties and to store operators. The inci dence of the crime is high with most of the thefts going undetected until showing up at inventory time. Police Chief V. L. Wiggins said the thefts often involve small, easily concealed items such as tapes, jew elry and make-up. He said the hardest hit stores are the A & P, Food Lion, Revco and Sky City. Convenience stores such as those in the David's Food Store chain are often the target of shoplifters also. Motorcycle chased, caught in the city Raeford Police Officers David Smith and Raymond Willis were conducting a trifle check on Adams Street about midnight Sunday when a motor-cycle driven by 19 year-old Bobby Shane Baker of Rt. 2, Raeford came through. When the motorcy clist saw the officers he raced away from the area and officers chased him on Prospect and Jackson Streets be fore finally stopping him.
