Big Beef tomato is All-American October 20, 1993 THE NEWS-JOURNAL Raeford, N.C. For those of you who thi nk it is never too early to start planning next year’s vegetable garden, here is something to really whet yourappetite — a new, juicy red tomato! Since 1933, a limited number of veg etables have had the honor of being designated as All-American Selections. Vegetables are evaluated for flavor, tex ture, disease resistance, production and space efficiency, nutrition and novelty value. One ofthe 1994All-AmericanSelec- tions winners is “Big Beef,” a red beef- steak-typ)e tomato weighing eight to 12 ounces, and “one slice fits a sandwich.” It is improved for earliness, fruit quality, taste and disease tolerances. Harvesting “Big Beef’ begins in about 73 days, very early for this size. The tomato was described by AAS Judges as “meaty, not mealy,” “firm flesh with a sweet flavor,” and “good sugar to acid ratio.” “Big Beef’ improves on “Better Boy” for disease tolerances. It tolerates Verticilliem Wilt, fursarium Wilt Race one and two, Alternaria Stem Canker, Nematodes, andTobacco Mosaic Virus. This rneans “Big Beef’ tolerates stress. Gary Warren Agricultural Extension Agent remains healthier and more productive. “Big Beef’ is an indeterminate plant, meaning it will flower, set fruit, and ripen continuously during the growing season. The highest quality beefsteak- type tomatoes will be produced when “Big Beef’ plants are trained to a stake and pruned. Avid tomato growers gladly prune plants that will probably reach five to six feet when mature. “Big Beef will take time to prune, but the reward will be a fresh, juicy beefsteak tomato with flavor never available from the grocery store. And who knows, this new tomato may help you win the title of ChampionTomato Grower in next year’s Hoke County Tomato Contest!!
