Red ribbons signify drug-free citizens
Raeford-Hoke is getting ready to cel
ebrate Red Ribbon Week, October 25-
31. This celebration is in honor of Agent
Enrique (Kiki) Camarena, a Drug En
forcement agent, who was m urdered after
hediscovered a multi-billiondollardrug
pipeline that possibly involved the Mexi
can army, police, and government.
News of his murder reached national
television, radio stations, and newspa
pers. The red ribbon became the symbol
of showing intolerance of drug use and
abuse. In 1988, the National Federation
of Parents of Drug Free Youth, coordi
nated the first Red Ribbon Week that
was an eight day celebration proclai med
by the Congress of the United States of
America.
“In order for the drug dealers and
users in Raeford-Hoke to visibly sit up
and take notice of our growing intoler
ance for their deals, they need to see the
red ribbons around town, schools and
communities and understand what they
symbolize. We as a community need to
be vocal about our intolerance by letting
them know we are not going to sit around
and let drugs overrun our lives and our
children’s lives,” says Marsha
McPherson, an organizer of Raeford’s
Red Ribbon Week.
To show support for Red Ribbon
Week, October 25-31, participants are
aksed to place a red ribbon on the front
of their houses, businesses, cars, or to
wear one during the week. “This will be
a goxl opportunity for thebusinesscom
munity to bond together to show support
of a drug free work place and commu
nity,” McPherson says. The schools will
also participate in this week by door
decorating contests that display a drug
free message, and students will be wear
ing red ribbons throughout the week. If
you would like to have a red ribbon for
your business made by a florist, the
following florists will be giving dis
counts for ribbon arrangements made:
Calico Corner, Brocks Florist,
Hollingsworth Florist, and the Colonial
House.

A Celebration of our families as being a part of
God's family.
October 31st - 11:00 a.m.
As a part of our worship of God,
we will celebrate the county's
first ever
Kirkin' O' The Tartans.
We worship God by thanking God
for our families and by seeking a
special blessing on the individual
families represented in our worship
service and on the larger family of
God we all represent.
This worship service will be a spe
cial titne of music, prayer, and the
reading and preaching of the Word
of God.
We welcome those who would like
to wear their kilts in honor of their
Scottish background. Regardless
of your background, you are in-
vited to bring or wear something
that represents your family.
