How to save energy, resources Catch of the day Hoke County Veteran’s Service Officer Tom Squier and daughter Jessica each killed a fox squirrel recently at Camp MacKall. Both are graduates of the North Carolina Hunter Education course. New Arrival? Share the good news with an ad in The News-Journal Energy is not recyclable so it has to be conserved. Thus, the key is to source reduce by not using so much to begin with. The best place to start with is right at home, since about 36 percent of en ergy consumption occurs in residen tial and commercial facilities. Most of this energy is used for heating and cooling. But a significant amount of total energy use (about 20%) is con sumed in lighting, water heating, food storage, cooking or washing. The good news is that it is easy to reduce. The really good news is that sav i ng energy is good for the env iron- ment as Vv'ell as your bank account. Since it is winter time, the time to start new habits is now. The refrigerator •Try to locate the refrigerator away from heat producing appliances such as the stove and out of direct sunlight. Also, avoid heat vents. • Make sure the refrigerator is level Carol Birckhead Director, Hoke County Cooperative Extension and that the area around the grill and any vents is both clean and unlocked. A great cleaning once a year will increase both efficiency and life. •Wipe moisture from containers and cover liquids. Excess humidity makes the compressor run longer. •Let hot dishes cool (never more than two hours) prior to putting them in the fringe or freezer. •Freezers that are at least two-thirds full run more efficiently. If near- empty, reuse and fill plastic milk jugs with water and place them inside. The dishwasher •Look for a unit that has low water usage i n the seven to ni ne gal Ion range. Eighty percent of energy consumed by a dishwasher is for water heating. •Use the right cycle. Rarely will you need to use the one for pots and pans. The light cycle uses far less water. •If available, use the no-heat fan or air dry setting. •Do not bother with pre-rinsing dishes that contain only a normal amount of residue. Pre-rinsing just uses more water. •Load dishes carefully and neatly. The washer •Low temperature washing saves lots of energy and money. Stay away from the hot water cycle and always use the cold water rinse. Cold water efficiency vs. hot water jumps to 93 percent saving about $120 a year. •Wash full loads. •Try to locate the machine close to the water heater and insulate the hot water pipes to the machine. o 0) 0) 0 We're iookinqjor the most romantic marriage proposal, if your marriage proposal was romantic or extra special to you — Share it with us!! ‘ItHnners mil tfieir slor}> piiblisfied in the paper for Valentine's V)ay ^LliS the top 3 (three) winners will receive prizes to be announced at a later date.
