McLauchlin Elemen tary School, recently attended a semi nar at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching. McNeill wasoneof 22 North Caro lina teachers participating in “Holi day Spirit: A Personal Renewal,” De cember 16-20, conducted by center director Mary Jo Utley. NCCAT, a unit of The University of North Carolina, provides a year- round series of interdisciplinary semi nars and other programs dedicated to advancing the art and profession of teaching.4 The following students received the honor of participating in the Principal's Honor Society at West Hoke Elementary School. They were treated to a luncheon on stage by the principal. The meal consisted of fried chicken, creamed potatoes, mixed vegetables, rolls and lemon cake for desert. These students received all “A’s” in academics subjects. They were: Kelly Barefoot, Crystal Morrow, Jalneet Gala, Britney Graham, Ritisha Blue, Kenneth Campbell, LaVerra Flowers, Gabrielle Patrick, Phillip Brock, Sundeep Madhas, Kamel McMillan, Malcolm Smith, Diondra McQueen, Jermaine Michael, Jonathon Vilela, Sakeena Harris, Shakendra McLean, Keyahna King and Shontanette Shaw. Linda M. McLaughlin received the Teacher of the Month Award for the month of January for Hoke County Schools. She is a teacher at West Hoke Elementary School with the Title I Program. She is a native of Hoke County and graduated from Hoke High School. She has been in educa tion for more than 20 years. The students that obtained an aca demic average of “A” and “B” re ceived a pizza party on Friday. The students that made perfect attendance for the last nine-week period were given an ice cream party. Students in the third grade class are reading to the kindergarten stu dents. The student that was featured this week was Rossell Leslie. Rossell read “The Best Monkeys in the World” to the students. Dolphin Ticket winners for week of January 17: Joshua Baldwin, Raven McQueen, Erica Hamm, David Purcell, Dana Pevia and Delton Mon roe.# The University of North Carolina at Charlotte has announced the chancellor’s and dean’s lists for the 1996 fall semester. To qualify for the chancellor’s list, a student must compete at least 12 semester hours with grades of A, B or C and achieve a quality point average of at least 3.8 out of 4.0. To qualify for the dean’s list, a student must complete at least 12 se mester hours with grades of A, B or C and achieve a quality point average of at least 3.4 but not more than 3.79. The following Hoke County stu dents earned Chancellor’s List hon ors: Christopher Kunce. Amy Black and Kimberly Hodges earned dean’s list honors.# Rockfish-Hoke Elementary wel comes back three staff members. Su san Fleak from the multi-age third and fourth grade students; Janet Lebo, who is returning from maternity leave; and Susan Merrell, the BEH resource teacher, who has been away because of a sickness in her family. Exciting events continue to hap pen around Rockfish Hoke. The sec ond week of January promises to be just as exciting as the first week. Several classes will be honoring and learning about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. There will also be recogni tion of an American founding father, statesman and inventor, Benjamin Franklin. The Rockfish-Hoke Elementary School Music Department will be re hearsing for concerts with its newly formed Rhythm Band. The group will be composed of kindergarten through third grade students who play rhythm percussion instruments along with musical accompaniment. A concert will be scheduled later on in the school year. The following students have made Ravenous Readers during the first semester at Rockfish-Hoke. In conjunction with National Children’s Book Week celebration, the first grade classes dressed as book characters and shared their favorite books in a program for the 2nd grad ers.# During the month of December, several events were held to benefit East Hoke Middle School “needy project.” The SGA, along with the entire student body sponsored eight fami lies with a Christmas food box. Sev eral boxes included toys and clothing. Denise Wallace, EHMS band in structor and Mrs. Flemming, EHMS chorus instructor, along with theirstu- dents had their annual “canned goods” drive Christmas concert. As usual, the concert and drive was a big suc cess and welcomed by the commu nity. The canned goods from the con certs made the eight Christmas boxes a great success.
