An additional employee not pictured is Red Beatty. Business helps recycling needs By Kristin Guthrie Staff writer For more than 30 years, Raeford Salvage Company Inc. has been do ing its part in the recycling process. They are responsible for taking in all types of scrap and converting it into useable material. They buy scrap metals, prepare it to mill specifications and ship it back to be made into new items, said Raeford Salvage Company Manager Johnny Parsek. While they don’t recycle any cardboard, glass or newspaper, the company does accept any type of metal — includ ing tin, iron or aluminum. Their work takes them all around Hoke County, Scotland County, Moore County and several loca tions in South Carolina. Picking up scrap in one of their four trucks is a service they only provide for their commercial accounts. Individuals who wish to dispose of scrap are re sponsible for getting their own recyclables to the salvage yard. Between the commercial accounts and the individual scrap drop-offs, Parsek said there has never been a shortage of things to do. Parsek has been with the company now for 16 years and he said things have pretty much always been the same. The equipment has been upgraded as tech nology changes. Recently, in fact, they have up dated their scales so they can weigh larger trucks. When buying scrap, they charge their customers by the weight of their scrap load. Having a larger scale means they can charge their customers without having to do a split calculation, weighing the front half of the truck and then back half and then adding the two together. This new scale will make the process much simpler, he said. The future doesn’t holdanyother changes, said Parsek, but this new scale is a significant change from the equipment they started with when Red Scarborough, the origi nal owner, opened the yard in 1964. Now the owners are Michael and Ronald Green. The Green’s and the other sal vage yard employees appreciate any business at their site on South Mag nolia Street. Their hours are Mon day to Thursday 8 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., and Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 4 p.m. Any questions about their services call 875-3480.
