Otis L. Crowder
Otis Luther Crowder, 80, of Rae-
ford, died Monday, January 28,2002
in FirstHealth Moore Regional Hos
pital in Pinehurst.
Mr. Crowder was born to the late
Manley and Ella Warren Crowder.
He was a member of Raeford Presby
terian Church and served in the U.S.
Navy during World War II. He was a
city carrier with the U.S. Postal Ser
vice and retired in the mid 1980s. As
a hobby he flew single engine air
planes and played the guitar.
Mr. and Mrs. Crowder celebrated
their 57th wedding anniversary on
March 8, 2001.
Funeral services will be conducted
at 3 p.m. Wednesday, January 30 in
Raeford Presbyterian Church held by
the Reverend KevinCampbell. Burial
will be in Raeford Cemetery.
Survivors include his wife. Flora
Alice Crowder of Raeford; two sons,
Wayne Crowder of Salisbury and
Archie Crowder of Smithfield; two
daughters, Mary Crowder of Char
lotte and Lisa Crowder Robinson of
Carthage; four brothers, Wayne
Crowder, Harold Crowder, Earl
Crowder and Jim Crowder, all of
Mountain City, Tennessee; three sis
ters, Pauline C. Greer of Coeburn,
Virginia, Mamie C. Adams of Moun
tain City, Tennessee and Dorothy C.
Purdue of High Point; and seven
grandchildren.

David K. Culbreth Sr., of
Thomasville, died Saturday, January
26,2002 at Thomasville Community
General Hospital. He was 79 years
old.
Mr. Culbreth was predeceased by
his wife, Mildred Culbreth.
The family received friends at Trin
ity Baptist Church on Highway 62 in
Trinity, NC on Monday. January 28 at
6 to 8 p.m. and again on January 29 in
Hope Mills at the Hamilton-Porter
Funeral Home at 7 to 9 p.m. The
funeral service will be Wednesday,
January 30 at 11 a.m. in Hope
Mills.
Mr. Culbreth is survived by three
children, Ruth C. "Smith, David K.
Culbreth Jr., and Carolyn M. Hoglen;
seven grandchildren, Chris Smith,
Aaron Smith, Tracey Smith, Whitney
Culbreth, Lauren Culbreth, Keith
Hoglen, and Jeremiah Hoglen; and
four great-grandchildren.

Lumberton. Mr. Williams was a mem
ber of Church of God and he worked
for Burlington Industries for 32 years
before retiring. He al.so worked for
S&M Auto.

Hoke employment climbed a bit in Dec.
There was a slight decrease in the
unemployment rate in Hoke County
from November 2001 to December
2001, according to the Employment
Security Commission of NC.
December’s rate was 9.4 percent with
10,820 employed out of a labor force
of 11,940.
Hoke had an unemployment rate
of 1 Opercent in November, according
to the latest ESC figures.
The ESC reported unemployment
rates fell in 60 of the state’s 100
counties in December. The commis
sion had no comment on whether or
not the employment rise was linked to
additional hiring for the Christmas
holiday.

HokeCounty Schools was awarded
a grant to open a Community Tech
nology Learning Center.
The center will be a place for stu
dents, parents and other members of

the community to go and use technol
ogy and media resources that may not
be available to them.
This is also an opportunity for par
ticipants to receive instruction on com
puter and technology objectives based
on the N.C. Standard Course of Study
and taught by a certified instruc
tor.

The CTLC is located in the West
Hoke Middle School Media Center
and Computer Lab at the intersection
of Turnpike and Aberdeen roads.
The hours of operat ion of the CTLC

James Morris
James Morris, a resident of Rae
ford for 13 years, passed away Mon
day, January 28 at 8:45 p.m. He was
80 years old.
Three sons, Jerome, Stephen and
Richard, and five grandchildren sur
vive him. He was a loving husband,
father and grandfather. His presence
will be truly mis.sed.
