History
Hoke County was named for Robert
F. Hoke (1827-1912) of Lincoln
County, a major general in the
Confederate Army.
Government
The county has a commissioner-
manager form of government with
fi\’e commissioners comprising tlie
go\’erning body.
The City of Raeford (county .seat)
has a council-manager form of
government with five councilmen and
a mayor making up the go\'erning
body.
City taxes are 49 cents per hundred
dollar valuation. County ta.xes are “'4
cents per hundred dollar valuation.
Financial Institutions
Three banks are located in Raeford:
Centura Bank, BB&T and the Fidelity
Bank. In addition, there are a savings
and loan — Progressi\ e S&L — and a
credit union — the N.C. State Employ
ees Credit Union. Other financial
institutions include offices of Farm
Credit Seivice and Farmers Home
Administration, Safeway Finance,
National Finance Company and the
Industrial Re\enue Bond Authority.
Education
The county has a consolidated
county-wide public school system,
operated and administered by an
elected board of education, which
appoints a superintendent.

Sandhills Regional Libraiy System,

The county' operates a recreation
